Need some advice with my quail egg!

Hi there!

I’m hatching quails at the moment and it’s been a bit of a drama-fest. The incubator I was using for the quails broke down right on hatching day, so I had to move the eggs to another incubator that’s around halfway through my chicken egg incubation period.

Out of my 5 quail eggs, 4 have hatched. However one pipped yesterday, and is still not out. I’ve attached a photo of where it’s at. I think it’s been about 24 hours since I first noticed a pip in the shell. The bird seems to be breathing and “nibbling” a bit. It’s currently day 19, counting the first day as day 0.

I really need to get in there to turn the chicken eggs, and I thought it would have hatched by now, so I’m not really sure what to do…

Also it seems as though the 5 button quail eggs aren’t doing anything. They were impossible to candle and have no pips or movement.

Should I give it more time? Or is it time to intervene? Will it hurt the chicken to open the incubator to turn the chicken eggs?

If it’s definitely been 24 hours I would do some research and attempt an assisted hatch, just stop if it starts bleeding. How long have the button quail eggs been in there?I had my incubator just a degree too cool and had a power outage for two hours and they took 18 days.I feel your pain with dramatic quail hatches.good luck!

Hey! Thanks for your reply. I ended up doing an assisted hatch, which originally went well. No bleeding, no blood left in the egg shell. The chick however was not great. I have it 12 hours in the incubator but it wasn’t able to move, it just lay there breathing heavily and kind of had little seizures every now and then.

It got to be too sad and I was worried about its suffering, so I euthanised it early this morning.

Thanks again for your reply.

Oh sorry, I forgot to reply about the buttons.

Nothing from them, unfortunately. It’s day 20 today so I’m losing hope for them.

I’m glad to have four of these little guys! With all the trouble we had, I think they’re quite lucky to have survived!
