Truly comprehensive resource explaining the inner workings of C#

Jon Skeet is a rare bird (I mean that only as the highest praise), and it shows in this book. It seems like many tech book authors these days are folks who spend more time on the conference circuit than noodling out production code, and that shows in the level of depth of many a doorstop covering the latest version of whatever framework/language/productivity app. But Skeet writes production code for Google in Java apparently at the same time he puzzles out the minutia of the C# compiler and how it interfaces with the .NET runtime, BCL, and surrounding tooling. That sort of a "comparative religions" understanding really comes through in his insightful commentary and explanations of how C# works and why.

It's fair to say that this book doesn't cover as much of the compiler and BCL as many other C# titles for a couple of reasons. First, it covers mostly what has changed through the various versions of C#, so it leaves out a few minor areas that haven't changed (like the use and creation of custom Attributes, for example). You won't miss the few things that Skeet omits if you have any other book on C#. Also, it really is a book about the C# language and compiler so while the behavior of the runtime is discussed somewhat, it's in relationship to the specific IL generated by the compiler in different situations. (If you really want a book about the CLR, I'd recommend Jeffrey Richter's book, CLR via C#.)

What Skeet does describe is the thorniest and most poorly understood aspects of C# in a version-by-version analysis of each language feature, how it was introduced, and exactly how it functions. All of this is critical for a developer who wants to get the most out of C#'s new language features (e.g. LINQ) and start to understand the functional programming paradigm that is making its way into the world of corporate IT. (I've actually read two other books specifically on LINQ and this book does a better job of explaining LINQ than either of them.)

Just one minor nitpik... the writing style is conversational and the text seems more verbose in places than it needs to be. This is easily forgivable because the writing is all very clear, and Skeet always has a definite point in mind. I think this just limits the book's usefulness as a quick reference somewhat.

All in all, I think this book is to C# what Joshua Bloch's Effective Java is to that other semi-colon language.

Though I am a C# beginner, I find that this is a good book for developers - at any level - who want to take their C# skills to the next level. I'm sure that if I had more C# experience I could take much more out of the book, but even as a beginner there are so many great snippets where Skeet demonstrates how the evolution of C# - from 1 to 4 - makes it easy for a developer to write concise, expressive, and efficient code. In particular I found his explanations of Generics, Delegates, and LINQ to be fascinating and surprisingly easy to understand. I've heard some say that this is "not a book for beginners," and I would concur if you are new to OOP in general. However, if you have even a bit of experience in OOP and have worked at least a few C# projects, you _will_ be able to understand the majority of the chapters, and after you've implemented some of the ideas in those, probably understand the rest of the book. I seriously doubt that anyone, excluding Skeet and a few other super C# experts, could read this and take nothing out of it. Bottom line, get yourself a copy. I would however recommend getting a traditional introduction to C# book, perhaps from the Head First series, to read alongside.

I have read about 20 books on various programming languages. By far, this is my favorite programming language book. I learned more than I could have hoped to. John Skeet is an amazing author. His knowledge and writing style went together perfectly. He always viewed his writing from the reader's perspective. If he thought something was going to be difficult, he let the reader know so they could prepare themselves to analyze the following text carefully. His code examples were some of the best I have seen. Very short, but they were able to get the point across.

My new job is all C# so I wanted to get a deeper understanding of the language. I first learned of John Skeet on StackOverflow where I saw his thorough, yet easy to understand answers there. I knew instantly John had intimate knowledge of the C# specification and his book would be a good alternative to reading the specification myself. After the first few pages I knew I had made a good decision. I literally could not put the book down. In the past, reading a few pages in a technical book meant I needed to go lie down for a little. I was learning so much that I kept reading on. The book also introduced me to Eric Lippert's blog which is a fascinating read.

I bought this book to help supplement my C# abilities. It is a very well written book it that goes in depth of topics that most other books would simply mention and then pass right over. It helps if you already know some stuff about C# but if you have no knowledge you will still be able to follow along with it. It is nicely broken down into sections that allow for quick access to check on a problem and i have actually found stuff in the book that lead me to do stuff a different way. The book also comes with a code to get a free pdf copy of it which you can put on an e reader, this is nice if you are like myself and work in an office where people are always borrowing the book to check things, that way you always have a copy if need be.

Jon Skeet fait aujourd'hui parti de la légende de la programmation grâce notamment à ses très nombreuses contributions sur le site stackoverflow.

Passionné du langage C#, il livre ici un livre qui sonne presque comme une déclaration d'amour. L'ouvrage est très différent des livres techniques existant autour du monde .NET. En effet, il se consacre uniquement au langage C# sans (presque) parler des classes, libraires graphiques et autre composantes du framework .NET au sens large.

Jon Skeet s'attache ici à expliquer le pourquoi et le comment de la syntaxe et des évolutions du langage C# au fil du temps. Cela peut sembler assez étrange au départ, mais au final je trouve que ce livre est bien plus enrichissant qu'un livre sur une technologie précise. A la fin de la lecture, j'ai vraiment le sentiment d'avoir comblé un vide et de mieux maîtriser mon outil principal : le langage. Les meilleures illustrations sont pour moi les chapitres sur les lambdas expressions et surtout LINQ, car on arrive vraiment à comprendre toute la mécanique derrière la "magie" de LINQ.

Le seul point négatif et je trouve le chapitre sur les Code Contracts qui semble du coup éloigné du reste du livre.

This book isn't your reference or tutorial book. Lets clear that up. You buy it because every programming language has natural idioms that give it great power and expressiveness. C# (AND VB post .net 3.5) have a number of natural ways to express ideas that a good coder will want to understand.

This book does that for C#. I code in Vb only at work and rarely C# BUT the whole book has impacted my career.

The chapter on closures will clear up their usage for anyone confused. Easily and simply.

For a coding book it is approachable, concise, conversational with chatty bloat and well worth your time.

If you are a .net programmer, buy it. It's a bloody excellent work.
