Saint Seiya(聖闘士星矢（セイントセイヤ）,Seinto Seiya), also known as Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac or simply Knights of the Zodiac, is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masami Kurumada. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1986 to 1990, with the chapters collected into 28 tankōbon volumes by Shueisha. The story follows five mystical warriors called the "Saints"(聖闘士（セイント）,Seinto, or "Knights" in some adaptations) who fight wearing sacred armors named "Cloths"(聖衣（クロス）,Kurosu), the designs of which derive from the various constellations the characters have adopted as their destined guardian symbols, and empowered by a mystical energy called "Cosmo"(小宇宙（コスモ）,Kosumo). The Saints have sworn to defend the reincarnation of the Greek goddess Athena in her battle against other Olympian gods who want to dominate Earth.
The manga was adapted into an anime television series by Toei Animation that ran from 1986 to 1989, before being continued in the form of three original video animation series between 2002 and 2008. Four animated feature films were shown in Japanese theaters from 1987 to 1989, with a fifth in 2004 and a sixth in 2014. Since 2006, creator Kurumada has been publishing a sequel manga titled Saint Seiya: Next Dimension. Several spin-off manga by different authors have also been created, as well as a standalone anime and original net animation.
Due to the series' high popularity in Japan and the rest of the world, four films based on Saint Seiya were released in theatres or TV between 1987 and 1989, while the original TV series was still airing. The plots of these films do not comply with the chronology of the manga or anime storylines and therefore it is unknown at what point the events of the films take place. A fifth film named Heaven Chapter: Overture was released in 2004, originally intended to initiate a continuation of the manga. A sixth film, Legend of Sanctuary, was premiered in 2014.
The first two movies received a theatrical release in France under Les Chevaliers du Zodiaque: Le Mal Goddess, and Bataille des dieux, where Knights of the Zodiac was at its prime popularity in that country. These films were never released in the U.S until it was announced by Discotek Media in 2012 that they had acquired the rights to the first four movies in a two disc set. The DVDs contain the original Japanese audio track with English subtitles.
Saint Seiya Omega(聖闘士星矢Ω（セイントセイヤオメガ）,Seinto Seiya Omega, stylized as Saint Seiya Ω) is an anime series produced by Toei Animation. It is a spin-off of the Saint Seiya anime series written and illustrated by Masami Kurumada, produced in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the franchise. The series began broadcasting in Japan on TV Asahi on April 1, 2012. It is directed by Morio Hatano (his debut as series director), with animation character designs by illustrator and animator Yoshihiko Umakoshi, known for performing the same duties on Street Fighter Alpha: The Animation, HeartCatch PreCure! and Casshern Sins.
The series follows a young teenager known as Koga who becomes one of the 88 warriors protecting the Goddess Athena known as Saints. As the Pegasus Bronze Saint, Koga embarks on a journey to increase his power to save Athena while meeting some other Saints. For the second season, the series tells the conflict between Athena and her sister Pallas which starts a new war. The series also got a manga adaptation and a fighting game.
