D.Gray-man(Japanese:ディー・グレイマン,Hepburn:Dī Gureiman) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Katsura Hoshino. The series tells the story of a boy named Allen Walker, a member of an organization of Exorcists who make use of an ancient substance called Innocence to combat the Millennium Earl and his demonic army of Akuma. Many characters and their designs were adapted from some of Katsura Hoshino's previous works and drafts, such as Zone.
The manga began serialization in 2004 in the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, published by Shueisha. It made the transition from a weekly to a monthly series in November 2009, when it began serialization in Jump SQ until December 29, 2012, where the series went on an indefinite hiatus. The series began serialization again on July 17, 2015 in a spin-off magazine of Jump Square, Jump SQ.Crown. There is also a spin-off novel series titled D.Gray-man Reverse, authored by Kaya Kizaki, that explores the history of various characters. As of August 5, 2014, Viz Media has released 24 volumes in the United States. The manga has also been adapted into a 103-episode anime series that aired from October 3, 2006 to September 30, 2008 in Japan. The anime is licensed by Funimation Entertainment in North America. Several related items of merchandise have also been produced. A new anime series has been announced to be aired in 2016; the series creator has confirmed that it will continue from where the original anime left off, rather than rebooting.
The second season of the D.Gray-mananime series is named the 2nd stage. The anime is directed by Osamu Nabeshima and produced by Dentsu, TMS Entertainment, Aniplex and TV Tokyo. The animation was produced by TMS Entertainment and Aniplex was responsible for the music production. The plot of the episodes is based on that of the D.Gray-manmanga series by Katsura Hoshino, and follows the adventures of Allen Walker, an Exorcist that wields the power of "Innocence" in order to fight against the Earl of Millennium, an ancient sorcerer seeking to destroy the world with monsters called akuma.
The episodes of the second season started airing on October 2, 2007 in Japan on TV Setouchi and TV Tokyo. Seven DVD compilations of the second season have been released by Aniplex between March 5, 2008 and September 3, 2008. Aniplex has announced the release of four more DVD compilations between October 1, 2008 and January 7, 2009.
Six pieces of theme music are used for the episodes: two opening themes and four ending themes. The two opening themes are "Doubt & Trust" by Access, used for episodes 52 to 76, and Uverworld's "Gekidō"(激動), which is used for the rest of the episodes. The four closing themes are "The Reason Why You Are Here"(あなたがここにいる理由,Anata ga Koko ni Iru Riyū) by Rie Fu, utilized for episodes 52 to 64, "Wish" by Sowelu, utilized for episodes 65 to 76, Mai Hoshimura's "Regret", utilized for episodes 77 to 89, and Stephanie's "Changin'", for episodes 90 to the final episode 103.
