Marc Reich originally reported a kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted
to kill the idle task!
Raf van de Vreugde reports no kernel panic. While sound does not
work, video does after:
1. Select another session with CTRL-ALT F1
2. log on with your user
3. go to /etc/X11
4. sudo pico xorg.conf
5. Scroll to the "Screen" section
6. Change for DefaultDepth 24 to 16
7. CTRL-O and Enter
8. CTRL-X
9. Shutdown with sudo shutdown -r now
Joshua suggests, in place of step 9 above, to press CTRL-ALT-F7, then at
the broken display, CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE. This will restart the GUI
