Christian Kranich of Vienna, Austria has a mammoth collection of cigarette packs representative of over 150 countries and spanning several decades. I have never smoked a cigarette in my life, so for me to sit drooling over their packaging is unusual to say the least. Believe it or not, there are some typographic gems amongst them and I have just spent way too much time exploring his online database not to share a few of my favourites, well 160 of them to be precise!
Find loads more information about the individual packs on Zigsam – the Austrian cigarette collection. Although the packs are archived by brand and country, I must warn you that browsing is not an easy task…
Absolutely mind-boggling to see the variety, vividness and ingenuity of cigarette packaging together in a collection like this one! It’s a ‘genre’ on its own. Creativity is probably one of the few qualities that goes beyond all boundaries – imaginery as well as substantial.

A really beautifully curated collection, thanks. Stunning to think that there used to be so much more of a choice before the big tobacco companies took over. Yes, love the irony that these are cigarette packs we’re drooling over!
The “Chevignon” package is quite a rare one for those cigarettes were never sold !
France, late 80’s : Chevignon was a very popular (especially among teens) clothes brand (later on they also made goggles, perfume, stationery).
When they decided to put their own cigarettes on the market, many were concerned about the impact on the teenagers. Thus, a few days before they went on sale, the french Prime Minister (Mr Rocard, if I remember well) did everything he could to band those cigarettes.
Finally, Chevignon decided to give up. End of story.
I was close to the people (my brother, dad, and uncle) who designed the packaging, this is why I know all the details. My uncle still has a sealed pack of those cigarettes.
