MANDRAKE

TAF TOP TEN

Steed pulls crackers to help Cathy unearth a grisly racket

Production completed: 16 January 1964
UK Premiere (London, Season 3): 25 January 1964
US Premiere (A&E cable): ca. 27 March 1991

Why is an obscure, nearly-deserted village in Cornwall chosen as the final resting place by a string of wealthy and prominent businessman? As one of the deceased was an acquaintance of Steed's, the matter comes under his scrutiny.

IMHO

Worthy of being an Emma Peel season episode, this one has all the best elements: a shifty-eyed (literally!) diabolical mastermind, a crooked doctor, a cute innocent and a lot of corpses. The graveyard set leaves a bit to be desired, but why carp? Extra points for better use of music this time around.

Trivia

Exclusive: Writer Roger Marshall has penned an essay about his tenure on The Avengers. And his son Rodney has reviewed this episode.

It was a close call for famed wrestler Jackie Pallo. Honor relates that, during the fight scene in the graveyard, "I should have put my boot in his face and then kicked. Instead, I ended up kicking out, splitting his nose and causing his eyes to go quite cross [see the third image]. He did manage to finish the fight and, after I pushed him into an open grave, he was out for the count for seven and a half minutes. As for me, I was sobbing around the grave, saying, 'I'll never fight again,' but, of course, I did." (Honor Blackman speaking to Steven Eramo of Starlog Magazine)

Some scenes were pre-recorded on 15 January 1964 in advance of the main recording.

Best Line

Steed relates that Mr. Benson didn't care much for his wife. "If there was fog in the air, Mrs. Benson was in the air."
