Trump’s Greenland comments could be part of policy of countering Russia and China — media

Trump’s transition team did not respond to a TASS request for comment

WASHINGTON, December 29. /TASS/. US President-elect Donald Trump’s remarks about making Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal part of the US could be part of a policy of countering Russia and China, The Washington Post writes, citing sources.

"An overarching mission of countering Russia and China is the common thread tying together Trump’s comments about Canada, Mexico, Greenland and Panama," the paper notes, citing a Trump transition official. "This isn’t just slapdash, there’s a coherent connective tissue to all of this," the official pointed out, adding: "Trump knows what levers to pull and what guardrails there are and he’s in a position of power to utilize those levers."

Trump’s transition team did not respond to a TASS request for comment.

Earlier, Trump referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the "governor" of the "Great State of Canada". He also claimed that the US could retake control of the Panama Canal unless the conditions for its use were revised. In addition, the US president-elect said that Washington needed to have control of Greenland.
