Overview

The University of Michigan (U-M) in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is one of the great public research universities of the United States and a leader in higher education.

Since 1817, the University has provided a national model of a complex, diverse, and comprehensive public institution of higher learning that supports excellence in research, provides outstanding undergraduate, graduate, and professional education, and demonstrates a commitment to service through partnerships and collaborations that extend to the community, region, state, nation, and around the world.

[The University's mission directs the institution to serve the people of Michigan and the world through preeminence in creating, communicating, preserving, and applying knowledge, art, and academic values, and in developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

The University serves its student body of more than 40,000, retains an eminent faculty of 8,000, and its libraries hold more than 12 million volumes. Michigan's excellence in higher education rests on the outstanding quality of its schools and colleges, twelve of which have undergraduate students, as well as on national recognition of individual departments and programs and on the many major scholarly and creative contributions of its faculty.

Michigan is a national leader in securing private sector support from its friends and alumni; it has more than 500,000 living alumni around the world.  

 


U-M Office of Research

The University of Michigan reported a record $1.71 billion in research expenditures during fiscal year 2022, fueling innovations to address critical challenges ranging from global health disparities and Great Lakes water quality to firearm violence and driverless vehicle technologies.

With 19 schools and colleges and more than 200 centers and institutes across campus, U-M conducts research in virtually every major area of science, engineering, medicine, social sciences, management, education, and the humanities. 

U-M is a leading U.S. public research university, according to the National Science Foundation, and offers 2.8M square feet of lab space for research and teaching. In the fiscal year 2022, U-M researchers reported 433 new inventions and 16 startups. U-M has 110 graduate programs ranked in the Top 10 by U.S. News & World Report.

Working together across disciplines is a hallmark of the U-M research environment as researchers join with colleagues in other fields to advance knowledge, solve challenging problems, and create marketable products.

U-M’s North Campus Research Complex, acquired from Pfizer in 2009, has become a vibrant center for the expansion of interdisciplinary translational research in such areas as mobility, cancer, health policy, bioinformatics, and the intersection of engineering and medicine. The complex now houses more than 2,700 faculty and staff, nine shared research facilities, and eight research Groups.

Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP)
The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects enables and safeguards the conduct of research and other sponsored activity for U-M. We apply specialized regulatory, statutory and organizational knowledge in a timely and professional manner in order to balance the university's mission, the sponsor's objectives, and the investigator's intellectual pursuits. We strive to deliver seamless support making ORSP and the University of Michigan the preferred partner for world-changing research. 

In FY2022, ORSP: 

  • Reviewed and submitted 7,531  proposals 
  • Processed 2,763 awards
  • Executed 2,004 Unfunded Agreements (e.g., nondisclosure, data use, etc.)
