THE MAINE ISLAND TRAIL ASSOCIATION

Explore and help steward the Maine coast’s most expansive recreational resource, running from Kittery to West Quoddy Head.

Hundreds of unique and beautiful ecosystems can be found just off Maine’s rocky coast.

Some Maine islands support year-round or seasonal communities. Others are wonderful windows onto the working waterfront. But most are currently uninhabited, undeveloped escapes into our natural world. In 1988, a grassroots group of sailors, boaters, paddlers, and nature lovers pioneered the idea of a water trail to protect these fragile, essential spaces and developed a powerful model of handshake agreements to make it work.

Join us in exploring and enjoying Maine’s islands, promoting equitable, responsible access, and supporting active, engaged environmental stewardship.
