President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Pete Hegseth — the weekend Fox & Friends host — is in trouble. Weeks of disturbing stories about Hegseth’s character and competence have Republican senators sitting on the fence, while Trump himself is reportedly contemplating other options. But Hegseth’s Fox colleagues, who initially ignored the reports, have finally come to his defense

Though he is wildly unqualified to lead the Pentagon, Hegseth has the skills and experience required for any position in the Trump administration: The former president likes his work on TV. Hegseth spent the past decade as a Fox talking head, pontificating about the perils of allowing women to serve in combat roles, defending U.S. service members and contractors who have been accused or convicted of war crimes, and floating military assaults on Iran and North Korea. Along the way, Hegseth relentlessly propagandized on Trump’s behalf, making him an influential figure during Trump’s first term. But relying on Fox to vet cabinet nominees has left something to be desired when it comes to Hegseth.

Fox’s right-wing propagandists and “news side” reporters initially remained mostly silent about the mounting controversies surrounding Hegseth. But on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, Hegseth’s Fox colleagues finally rallied to his defense, gathering denials and testimonials about his character and defending him on air.

With Hegseth’s Fox friends trying to preserve his spot at Defense he has a chance, but their effort may be too little, too late.

  • Right-wing media launched a migrant witch hunt in rural Indiana

Months after the Trump campaign’s flagrant lies about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, went viral, right-wing media continue to fuel fear of Haitian migration. In Indiana, a small city was the focus of a misinformation-fueled migrant witch hunt led by right-wing media that emboldened hate groups and is now being used as a case study to justify anti-immigrant policies.

In mid-September, right-wing talk radio host Kayla Blakeslee posted on Facebook screenshots of emails that claimed “20,000 plus Haitian immigrants” were “dropped off” in Logansport, Indiana. Blakeslee wrote, “Is Logansport, IN the new Springfield, OH???” This factually inaccurate post was the first snowball in an avalanche of misinformation and hate that spread about Haitian migrants in Logansport

I invite you to read the whole story here. This is another chilling example of how right-wing media fuels hate that has real-world consequences. With Donald Trump returning to the White House, emboldened by anti-migrant misinformation, the consequences may be dire.
