WILL A GAS STOVE WORK WITHOUT ELECTRICITY?

If you’re using your gas stove to cook a family meal or preparing food for guests and the power goes out, you may be able to use a little creativity to get dinner on the table. Some gas stoves can continue to function on a limited basis without electricity, while others won’t work.

It’s best to check your owner’s manual for model-specific details, although you may be able to follow these general instructions. Read on to learn about what parts of your stove might be able to work without electricity and how to manually light a cooktop burner.

ARE GAS STOVES CONNECTED TO ELECTRICITY?

Even though a gas stove uses gas for cooking, it relies on electricity for ignition and other features such as the electronic control panel and oven light. In contrast, electric stoves use only electricity to heat the cooking elements inside the oven and on the cooktop.

The benefit of a gas stove is that it can offer users more control over the temperature and open flame on the cooktop. Gas ovens also tend to preheat quickly. In contrast, an electric stove can offer consistent, precise heating in the oven cavity. A dual fuel range can combine the strengths of both types of stoves as it features a gas cooktop and electric oven. For more details, you can learn more about how an oven works.

CAN YOU MANUALLY LIGHT A GAS STOVE WITH ELECTRIC IGNITION?

Some gas stove models have a safety feature that can prevent manual lighting of a cooktop burner. If your stove doesn’t have this feature, you may be able to manually light the burner. Consult your owner’s manual for model-specific instructions.

To manually light a gas burner, simply hold a lit match near the burner and turn the knob counterclockwise to “LITE.” After the burner lights, turn the knob to your desired setting.

CAN YOU USE A GAS RANGE OR COOKTOP DURING A POWER OUTAGE?

Gas ranges and cooktops typically use electronic igniters instead of standing pilots. Depending on the model, you may be able to manually light your cooktop burner during a power outage, however, you won’t be able to use your gas oven. Check your owner’s manual to be sure and for more detailed instructions.
