Jessica: I hosted Darcey Steinke for an event at the bookstore when this book came out in 2019 and at the time I was like “wow, she is a smart and passionate lady, and she really likes orcas.” Now it’s five years later and I’ve finally read it and I’m like “EVERY WORD IN THIS BOOK IS THE ABSOLUTE SHINING TRUTH.” It’s nice when someone brilliant decides to write seriously about things that are typically just snickered at: in this case the widely varied state I like to call “reverse puberty” which can sometimes contain all of the literally burning rage of a massive transformation. Flash Count Diary is liberatingly feminist and immersed in the natural world and deeply literate, and I am belatedly awestruck by Darcey who is clearly a heroic wild matriarch. (And yes, orcas experience menopause… also they have huge badass matriarchal societies and will take down your capitalist yacht, so.)
