I hope I didn't create the wrong impression; XFS is not the problem here, it just happened to be the filesystem that was in use.

Oh, you didn't at all!

And I don't mean to sound negative either. If there's any conclusion to be made here, it's that XFS is really good at provoking improvements everyone can benefit from.
