This article is about the chapter. For the episode of The Rings of Power, see A Shadow of the Past. |
The Shadow of the Past is the second chapter of the first book in The Fellowship of the Ring.
Plot[]
On April 12, 3018, Gandalf returns to Bag End after many years and explains to Frodo the true nature of Bilbo's (now Frodo's) magic ring, how it is the One Ring and must be destroyed for the good of the Shire and all the Free Peoples of the world.
Synopsis[]
Frodo brings the Ring out of the fireplace, and asks Gandalf about the markings on the side. Gandalf explains the text is the Black Speech of Mordor, and then reads the loosely translated version.
"Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for the Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where Shadows lie."
