Mirdania was an Elven-smith of Eregion in the Second Age, who learned under Celebrimbor[1] and was one of the Gwaith-i-Mírdain.
Biography[]
Mirdania was a protégé[1] of the master craftsman Celebrimbor. When Halbrand arrives in Ost-in-Edhil to see the great blacksmith, Celebrimbor, who has promised Galadriel not to speak to the man again, sends Mirdania to tell him that she refuses to see him.
Celebrimbor shows Mirdania his new invention, Ithildin. His assistant pities Halbrand who is still waiting outside. Celebrimbor then goes to him to tell him to leave. Halbrand manipulates him. He makes him believe that he has seen Galadriel, that the Rings have saved the Great Tree and the elves, but that Gil-galad has not even bothered to warn the master blacksmith. Finally Celebrimbor brings him in where he re-appears as Annatar.
When the master blacksmith refuses, Annatar attempts to forge the Rings of Men on his own. He is helped by Mirdania, among others. They are experimenting with putting even more Mithril into the mix to limit the risk of corruption in humans. When the young blacksmith puts on the ring to check her size, she disappears from everyone's eyes.
She finds herself in the Invisible World unprepared. Everything seems identical, but as if blurred. She sees a tall, dark being, with flaming skin and ageless, merciless eyes, which makes her panic. She grabs tools to defend herself, which frightens the blacksmiths present who suddenly see the objects flying. Celebrimbor, alerted by the screams, manages to catch Mirdania by following a flying hammer and removes the ring.
Annatar goes to talk to the young elf who is recovering from her emotions. He tells her about this world she has seen where beings reveal their true form. He makes her believe that the dark creature is Celebrimbor who is weakened by the creation of the rings and less resistant to the forces of evil. She believes him and promises not to mention her master's weakness to anyone, not even with him.
Deceived by Annatar's false kindness, Mirdania is misled into believing Celebrimbor has lost his mind. When Celebrimbor at last learns the truth of Annatar's identity and escapes the illusion he was placed under, he rushes to warn Mirdania, who disbelieves him. To further discredit Celebrimbor, Sauron, still in his guise as Annatar, eggs Celebrimbor on to shake her, but Sauron telekinetically shoves Mirdania from the rampart to the Orcs below. A large Orc then kills her. Framed for the manslaughter of his assistant, the great smith is then taken away by his own soldiers.
Characteristics[]
She is a devoted assistant to her Master and exhibits a generous nature. She also was tricked by Sauron into thinking Celebrimbor was going mad with the desire to make the rings of men.
Behind the scenes[]
The character was created for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power who first appears in Season Two, and as such is non-canonical. The character is portrayed by British actress Amelia Kenworthy.
