The Last Alliance of Elves and Men was a great union of Elves and Men formed in the year 3430 of the Second Age, in response to the threat of conquest by the Dark Lord Sauron. This response manifested as the War of the Last Alliance. J.R.R. Tolkien referred to them as the Allies in a letter.[1]
History[]
In the year SA 3429, Sauron attacked and captured Minas Ithil, burning the White Tree that stood there. Isildur, unable to hold off Sauron, retreated to the north while his brother Anárion defended Osgiliath, managing to recapture Minas Ithil the following year.[2]
As a response to the aggression of Sauron, Elendil, King of all the Dúnedain, made an alliance with Gil-galad, High King of the Ñoldor. Durin IV of Khazad-dûm also joined this alliance, at some subsequent time sending a force of Durin's Folk.[3] The following year, in SA 3431, the assembled army traveled east to Rivendell. After three years training and planning, in SA 3434, the army crossed the Misty Mountains and marched south to Mordor.[2]
At the plain of Dagorlad, the host met the army of Sauron, and a great battle took place, with even birds and beasts fighting upon both sides. The alliance was victorious, and thereafter entered Mordor through the Black Gate. Soon the army of Elves and Men entered Gorgoroth, surrounding and setting siege to Barad-dûr. This siege was to last seven years, until SA 3441, when at last Sauron himself came forth. In the ensuing struggle, both Elendil and Gil-galad perished at Sauron's hand, but Sauron also was defeated, and Isildur cut the One Ring from the Dark Lord's hand.[3]
Thus Sauron was defeated, and the land of Mordor guarded by the Dúnedain for some 1600 years. The alliance was disbanded, and the surviving participants returned to their own countries. Many Elves sailed into the west following the end of the war, bringing an end to the realm of Lindon.
It is unclear whether it was called the Last Alliance because it was the last time that the Elves marched to war in Middle-earth in significant strength or because it was hoped this would be the Last time Elves and Men had to unite against their common foe.
