The Houses of the Dead, also referred to as the Hallows, were a number of crypts located atop the shoulder portion that linked Mount Mindolluin to the Hill of Guard, in the city of Minas Tirith. It was here that the Stewards of Gondor, and the Kings before them, were buried. It was located on Rath Dínen, the "Silent Street", roughly matching the sixth circle of the city.

When the Steward Denethor II fully despaired upon Mordor's siege of Minas Tirith, he took his son, Faramir, whom he thought deceased, to the Houses, intending to burn both Faramir and himself alive on a pyre.[1] Faramir was rescued by Gandalf, Peregrin Took, and Beregond, but Denethor burned to death, leaving the House of Stewards in ruin.

The bridge to the Hallows in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

In Peter Jackson's 2003 film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the entrance way to the Houses of the Dead is a large wooden door built into a cliff-side. A long hallway beyond has an intersection where three passageways branch off at 90, 180 and 270 degrees from the hallway. Along the walls, alcoves were set, each with a stone tomb, the top of each tomb carved into the likeness of the steward contained within. In the center of the intersection a plain stone slab lay upon which the soldiers prepared a pyre at Denethor's request.
