Fankil, also known as Fangli or Fúkil, was a servant of Melko in earlier versions of the legendarium.[1]
History[]
In The Book of Lost Tales, Fankil managed to escape when Utumna was kept by the Valar and Melko was imprisoned in Aman. After the destruction of the Two Trees, Melko came back to the Great Lands and having heard about the Awakening of Men, he sent Fankil to Palisor to deceive Men. There he alienated most of the Men against the Elves. His actions led to the War of Palisor, in which the Hisildi fought against the army of Melko, formed by Goblins and Nauglath. However, in the end, Tareg, the leader of the Ilkorindi, came in to help his kin, while the Noldoli fought against Melko in the northwest of the Great Lands.
Behind the scenes[]
Perhaps, his role as the lieutenant of the Dark Lord and his deceptive attitude were features reused for the creation of the character of Sauron.
