The Accursed Years, also called the Black Years or Dark Years, refers to the first millennium of Sauron's rule over Middle-earth in the latter part of the Second Age.
During this period, Númenor's power grew, whilst the power of the Elves declined from the wars and tyranny of Sauron's rule. The Men of Middle-earth were mostly enslaved to the Dark Lord's will, and many worshiped him as a god. Sauron claimed the Rings of Power early on, forging the One Ring for himself. The Accursed Years ended with the War of the Last Alliance and the destruction of the Dark Tower.
