October 24, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Attention UNC Writers!
We’re holding a Creative Nonfiction Workshop open to all:
WEDNESDAY, October 24
6:30 to 8 pm
Donovan Lounge, Greenlaw Hall (223)
Catering by So Good Papusas!
What is creative nonfiction, you may ask? This umbrella term is a dressing gown too conservative for a genre with so many styles: literary journalism; memoir; the video, radio, and photo essay; cultural criticism; food, science, and nature writing. How can one genre address all of these styles, you may ask? We are writers of witness, writers interested in the guts and hearts that beat and churn within humanity. We are vulnerable writers, writers who offer our personal stories up like gifts. We are tender. We are fierce. We are the artists who respond to the current political and social climate, as we always have. In our classes, we write and read our own work throughout the semester, but we also read practitioners of the genre: James Baldwin, Luis Alberto Urrea, Jeff Chang, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Maxine Hong Kingston, among others.
Professors Randall Kenan, Stephanie Elizondo Griest, and Matt O’Wain will lead a workshop highlighting food writing, memoir, the radio essay, and offer attendees a chance to experience a taste of what can be gained from our new and necessary creative writing track in nonfiction.
There will be free (for you) pupusas from So Good Pupusas, which give all profits to undocumented & DACAmented students. http://www.sogoodpupusas.com
Bring your notebook or laptop.
Many thanks and see you soon!
