From Proto-Tai *C̥.bawᴬ (light (in weight)). Cognate with Thai เบา (bao), Northern Thai ᨷᩮᩢᩤ, Lao ເບົາ (bao), ᦢᧁ (ḃaw), Khün ᨷᩮᩢᩤ, Shan မဝ် (mǎo) or ဝဝ် (wǎo), Tai Nüa ᥛᥝ (maw), Ahom 𑜉𑜨𑜧 (mow), Nong Zhuang nawj, Saek เว๋า, Tày bau.
