[edit]Inherited from Malay awas, from Javanese ꦲꦮꦱ꧀ (awas), from Old Javanese awās, ultimately from Classical Persian آواز (āwāz, “voice, sound, call”). Cognate with Sanskrit वाच् (vā́c) and Latin vōx. Doublet of mawas and wawas.
