[edit]Borrowed from Latin alphabētum (“alphabet”), from Ancient Greek ἀλφάβητος (alphábētos), from ἄλφα (álpha, “alpha”) and βήτα (bḗta, “beta”) (the names of the first two letters in the Greek alphabet). Doublet of алфа́ві́т (alfávít).
Compare Ukrainian алфабет (alfabet) (1627), алфабетумъ (alfabetum) (17th century), Polish alfabet, Bulgarian алфабе́т (alfabét), Serbo-Croatian alfàbēt, Slovene alfabét.
