From Old Galician-Portuguese agua (water), from Latin aqua (water), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ekʷeh₂ (water). Cognate with Galician auga, Spanish agua, Catalan aigua, Occitan aiga, French eau, Italian acqua and Romanian apă.
