Chakraborty (other spelling variations include Chakraborti, Chakrabarti, Chakrabarty and Chakravarty) is a surname of Bengali Hindus and Assamese Hindus of India and Bangladesh, which literally means 'wheels rolling'; metaphorically it denotes a ruler whose chariot wheels roll everywhere without obstruction (čakra ‘wheel’ + vart- ‘to roll’).[1] The surname is used by people of the kulin Bengali Brahmin[2][3][4] and Assamese Brahmin[5][6] communities in States of West Bengal,Tripura and Assam.

It is said that when the five brahmins went to the court of Adisura, there were 700 families of brahmin residents in Bengal, who were called Saptasatis or Satsatis (meaning 700).
