    Robert Falcon Scott

Captain Robert Falcon Scott, CVO, RN (6 June 1868 – 29 March 1912) was an English Royal Navy officer and explorer who led two expeditions to the Antarctic regions: the Discovery Expedition, 1901–04, and the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition, 1910–13. On the first expedition, he set a new southern record by marching to latitude 82°S and discovered the Polar Plateau, on which the South Pole is located. During the second venture, Scott led a party of five which reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that they had been preceded by Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition. On their return journey, Scott's party discovered plant fossils, proving Antarctica was once forested and joined to other continents. A planned meeting with supporting dog teams from the base camp failed, and at a distance of 150 miles from their base camp and 11 miles from the next depot, Scott and his companions died from a combination of exhaustion, starvation and extreme cold.

Before his appointment to lead the Discovery Expedition, Scott had followed the conventional career of a naval officer in the Royal Navy. In 1899, he had a chance encounter with Sir Clements Markham, the president of the Royal Geographical Society, thus learning of a planned Antarctic expedition, and soon volunteered to lead this expedition. Having taken this step, his name became inseparably associated with the Antarctic, the field of work to which he remained committed during the final twelve years of his life.

Nikos Deja Vu - The Race For The Poles (Historical Documentary) At the beginning of 20th century there were only 2 regions of our planet that were completely . The first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole was led by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. He and four others arrived at the pole on 14 December 1911,[n 1] five weeks ahead of a British party led by Robert Falcon Scott as part of the Terra Nova Expedition. Amundsen and his team returned safely to their base, and later learned that Scott and his four companions had died on their return journey. Amundsen's initial plans had focused on the Arctic and the conquest of the North Pole by means of an extended drift in an icebound ship. He obtained the use of Fridtjof Nansen's polar exploration ship Fram, and undertook extensive fundraising. Preparations for this expedition were disrupted when, in 1909, the rival American explorers Frederick Cook and Robert E. Peary each claimed to have reached the North Pole. Amundsen then changed his plan and began to prepare for a conquest of the South Pole; uncertain of the extent to which the public and his backers would support him, he kept this revised objective secret. When he set out in June 1910, he led even his crew to believe they were embarking on an Arctic drift, and revealed their true Antarctic destination only when Fram was leaving their last port of call, Madeira. Amundsen made his Antarctic base, which he named "Framheim", in the Bay of Whales on the Great Ice Barrier. After months of preparation, depot-laying and a false start that ended in near-disaster, he and his party set out for the pole in October 1911. In the course of their journey they discovered the Axel Heiberg Glacier, which provided their route to the polar plateau and ultimately to the South Pole. The party's mastery of the use of skis and their expertise with sledge dogs ensured rapid and relatively trouble-free travel. Other achievements of the expedition included the first exploration of King Edward VII Land and an extensive oceanographic cruise. The expedition's success was widely applauded, though the story of Scott's heroic failure overshadowed its achievement in the United Kingdom. Amundsen's decision to keep his true plans secret until the last moment was criticised by some. Recent polar historians have more fully recognised the skill and courage of Amundsen's party; the permanent scientific base at the pole bears his name, together with that of Scott.

The Race to the South Pole full documentary on Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott south pole deadly expedition. Between December 1911 and January 1912, both Roald Amundsen (leading his South Pole expedition) and Robert Falcon Scott (leading the Terra Nova Expedition) reached the South Pole within five weeks of each other. But while Scott and his four companions died on the return journey, Amundsen's party managed to reach the geographic south pole first and subsequently return to their base camp at Framheim without loss of human life, suggesting that they were better prepared for the expedition. The contrasting fates of the two teams seeking the same prize at the same time invites comparison. A thorough telling of the events of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). This was an Antarctic venture led by famed explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, whose main objective, aside from the many scientific research goals, was to reach the geographic South Pole and claim it for the United Kingdom. It is a well-known tale of struggle and survival, but too many people focus solely on Scott's part in the expedition, and exclude the adventures of the many other men who accompanied him in Antarctica. This documentary aims to address Scott and his companions thoroughly, who were a band of interesting and colorful characters. Many were brave and honorable, and a few were arguably negligent. Join me in this sprawling documentary epic produced over a period of two years. You will be enthralled, educated, entertained, and moved. 0:00:00 - Introduction 0:01:35 - Part 1: Discovery 0:23:55 - Part 2: Intermission & Nimrod 0:38:22 - Part 3: Terra Nova 1:01:28 - Part 4: Settling Down & Setting Up 1:40:58 - Part 5: Winter Life 1:58:22 - Part 6: Cape Crozier 2:31:55 - Part 7: Intermission & Final Preparations 2:41:19 - Part 8: The Southern Journey 3:25:34 - Part 9: The Last March 4:17:19 - Part 10: Intermission & Second Winter 4:30:42 - Part 11: Search & Rescue 4:42:38 - Part 12: Aftermath List of sources and references: https://pastebin.com/V4WJSadY Subscribe to the channel and hit the bell button to catch every new doc and update! A contentious election is nothing new in American history. Yet the presidential election of 1800—pitting incumbent John Adams against Thomas Jefferson—still stands out as one of the most controversial. This hotly contested race introduced new levels of partisanship and ushered in significant political realignment, but it also marked the first peaceful transfer of power in the young United States. Join us on Tuesday, November 2, at 1:00 p.m. for an encore presentation of our Election of 1800 livestream with Thomas Jefferson, interpreted by Bill Barker, and John Adams, interpreted by Steve Holloway.

Confederacy Series #1 - The History of "White" - Livestream The first time the word 'white' was used as a descriptor of a person was, likely 1613. This program sorts out the prehistory of "race" as it developed through European religious institutions, colonial practices and commercial exploitation. "White" is first found in Virginia law in the 1690s. And, why, e.g. Western global aesthetics still privilege a politics of colorism. It wasn't until 1940 that the rules were changed to allow women of color to enter the Miss America pageant. Before that, the official rules stated that contestants had to be "of good health and of the white race." __________________________ Presenter: Edward J. Bridging the Atlantic was a presentation highlighting the history, connection, and interpretation of Iron Bridge Gorge, a World Heritage Site in Shropshire, England and multiple iron sites in southeastern Pennsylvania, including Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site. The presentation featured Gillian Crumpton and Georgina Grant from Iron Bridge Gorge and David Blackburn, former site director at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site and currently with Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. The presentation was organized by the Iron and Steel Heritage Partnership, which was formed to attract visitors to and educate residents about sites associated with iron and steel history in southeastern Pennsylvania. This region boats the longest history with and connection to the iron and steel industry and has the largest collection of historic forgets and furnaces located in concentration in this country.

This lecture is a three-part slideshow presentation with narration by David H. Warren. In part one, he mentions four great awakenings in the history of this country, focusing primarily on the first which occurred between 1730-1760, when the 13 colonies were still under British rule. This awakening has to do with a renewed interest toward religion and spiritual thinking. He also discusses reasons why this took place here in America.

The deadly race to the South Pole

Two exploration teams raced to the South Pole. Only one made it out alive. Correction: A previous version of this video used an outdated British flag. The error has been corrected. We also occasionally referred to the British team as English. In fact, some members of Scott's team were Scottish and Welsh. Help us make our channel more ambitious by joining the Vox Video Lab. In 1912, he reached the Pole only to learn that his Norwegian rival, Roald Amundsen, had beat him to it. Caught by freakish weather and a string of bad luck, his entire party died trying to get back. Reasons for his failure range from his use of ponies rather than dogs to a highly unusual temperature drop that made the journey back impossible to survive. Darkroom is a new series from Vox producer Coleman Lowndes that digs into stories of the past, one photograph at a time.
