Sand in Taufers (Template:Lang-it) is a comune (municipality) in South Tyrol in northern Italy, located near the border with Austria, about 70 km northeast of the city of Bolzano.

Geography

As of 30 November 2010, it had a population of 5,261 and an area of 164.3 km².[3]

Sand in Taufers borders the following municipalities: Gais, Percha, Prettau, Rasen-Antholz, Sankt Jakob in Defereggen (Austria), Mühlwald and Ahrntal.

History

Origin

Taufers is home to the impressive medieval Taufers Castle, which towers above village and was built in the early 13th century.[4]

Coat-of-arms

The arms is barry of six gules and argent. The first two of argent have three lozenge of azure, the third has two. The emblem was of the Lords of Taufers that became extinct in 1300. The emblem was adopted in 1967.[5]

Linguistic distribution

According to the 2011 census, 97.34% of the population speak German, 2.30% Italian and 0.36% Ladin as first language.[6]
