Really, the only thing the game did was creating a decent camera and pioneering the collectathon genre. I still like this game, though I definitely think 64 DS is better than the OG in every way (yes, even the controls), except for the fact that they made the grass in Bob-omb Battlefield less green. I'm someone who thinks the game is passable at best. What is weird to me is that the game has so many glaring issues that people are either ignoring or not aware of somehow. And it's not like it's just nostalgia, because I have seen tons of younger people say the game is amazing to. At this point, it feels like I must be crazy or something. My biggest problem with people hailing this game as the greatest thing ever is the excuses for its quality. Things like "it was a product of its time" and "we didn't have better" are arguments that I see people use for this game, but then ignore for other games in which those excuses should still be true. For example, there are other games with crappy controls that came out of even more primitive hardware, yet people still point to those things as issues for a game. Super Mario 64 on the other hand has this unfair bias to it. It was one of the first of its kind, but that doesn't excuse its crappy qualities. Personally, I don't care when a game came out, who made it, what it was made on, and what legacy it had. If something about it is crappy or bad, then it's a crappy and bad aspect of a game. I really think that there is no excuse for that.
I'm not trying to tell people not to like the game, I'm just putting it out there that this game isn't really all that amazing.
I get similar feelings when someone gives credit to the first game in a series for "being the one that started it all". I mean, that's just an excuse to hide the fact that they're not intelligent enough to point out the actual qualities of that game.

I'd say the DS version of the game is definitely the definitive way to play Super Mario 64. It still has some problems like the control, but even those issues have been fixed to an extent.

Damn! I agree with most of your points on the games quality itself. I think it if highly overrated and is pretty bad. But isn't this taking it a bit far? If someone can enjoy a game it probably wasn't someone else's opinion. Even if an almost universally liked game kinda sucks, isn't the important thing that it brought people together?

Yeah, your probably right. I get really aggressive when talking about this game. There are tons of other games that I think are bad that are super popular but I never get mad when people say they are good. no, the reason why people love this game is because it was the first 3D mario game to exist, it also REVOLUTIONIZED gaming as a whole and because of the gameplay, it is an overall very impressive game for the N64, sure it may not be graphically as good for today's standards compared to '96's standards but it's an impressive game especially for the 90s because in the 90s we were still getting 2D mario games like Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island (it's not really a mario game but the title implies that it is [for those who don't know the full title is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]), this game marked a place in the timeline of gaming
