I'm someone who thinks the game is passable at best. What is weird to me is that the game has so many glaring issues that people are either ignoring or not aware of somehow. And it's not like it's just nostalgia, because I have seen tons of younger people say the game is amazing to. At this point, it feels like I must be crazy or something. My biggest problem with people hailing this game as the greatest thing ever is the excuses for its quality. Things like "it was a product of its time" and "we didn't have better" are arguments that I see people use for this game, but then ignore for other games in which those excuses should still be true. For example, there are other games with crappy controls that came out of even more primitive hardware, yet people still point to those things as issues for a game. Super Mario 64 on the other hand has this unfair bias to it. It was one of the first of its kind, but that doesn't excuse its crappy qualities. Personally, I don't care when a game came out, who made it, what it was made on, and what legacy it had. If something about it is crappy or bad, then it's a crappy and bad aspect of a game. I really think that there is no excuse for that.
I'm not trying to tell people not to like the game, I'm just putting it out there that this game isn't really all that amazing.
I get similar feelings when someone gives credit to the first game in a series for "being the one that started it all". I mean, that's just an excuse to hide the fact that they're not intelligent enough to point out the actual qualities of that game.
(And my point about the critic thing was that, you don't have to be better than someone to point out their mistakes.)
You don't have to be able to cook to be a food critic, so I recommend that you come up with better roast from now on.
That statement confuses me...

What a very lame and terrible defense. I can't believe you thought it was a good one. First of all, first 3D Mario game made people love it. That's straight up nostalgia. They are remembering their first venture into a 3D Mario game. Nostalgia. Also, just because a game revolutionized 3D gaming, doesn't mean it's a good game. Um, and your argument about the graphics... What? I didn't even mention them. The colorful graphics are like, one of the only positive things about the game. But the level design is annoying and feels slapped together, especially the bowser levels. It feels like the game's level design pared with the abysmal controls feels like the game doesn't want you to have fun with it. I mean come on, I can't flick the joystick without traveling 9000 feet in the direction I flicked in. The N64 is a bad console already with the worst controller in gaming but this makes it worse. And the restricted quote on quote amazing camera means I can't see the direction I'm jumping in anyway. The bowser levels, Tick Tock Clock, Wet Dry World, Tall Tall Mountain, corn nuts RAINBOW RIDE like what the hell Nintendo, do you want me to roll over and die? The only good stage is Bomb Omb Battlefield accompanied by one of the only good song in the game. The wing cap sucks holy cow and feels like a scrapped power up that was never finished more than an actual power up, and NO, I'M NOT GOING TO WASTE HOURS OF MY LIFE MASTERING IT SO I CAN ACTUALLY USE IT BECAUSE IT'S A corn nuts MARIO GAME AND I SHOULD'NT HAVE TO. And finally, using the fact that other 2D Mario games that are way better than Mario 64 anyway aren't as good because they are 2D is straight up ignorant. So stop listening to people who hail Mario 64 because of nostalgia, go back and play the game, and look at it from an objective standpoint. Or be lazy and don't, and go back to being one of the thousands of people basing all their opinions off of what other people have said instead of actually playing the game and acknowledging all of it's problems which most seem to blinded by nostalgia to see.
Smart choice not mentioning the god awful camera and controls. Come back when you have a real opinion.
I look forward to hearing your in depth opinion of this game. Oh wait, you don't have one.
Side note, another reason why people like this game is because it's a Mario game. Don't deny it, if it was anything but a Mario game, it would be terribly reviewed. I know I can't change your mind, because when a person is corrected, it usually reinforces their original belief.
ROASTED🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
if the game is so bad, why don't you make a better version of it yourself
I'm sure it was probably a simple mistake. Either way, I hope they add it eventually.
I hope they do, can't trust the official stuff cause it isn't game accurate. One of the reasons I don't wanna support official releases cause their a gaslight.
Apparently, if you're a 3D platformer before this game, you don't exist because Mario 64 "revolutionized" 3D gaming. Really, the only thing the game did was creating a decent camera and pioneering the collectathon genre. I still like this game, though I definitely think 64 DS is better than the OG in every way (yes, even the controls), except for the fact that they made the grass in Bob-omb Battlefield less green.
Reading "decent camera" brought back ptsd flashbacks. Lol 😅

I played the DS version recently which was my first time playing Mario 64 in any form and I honestly liked it, I wouldn't have had any nostalgia to affect my opinion.
I'd say the DS version of the game is definitely the definitive way to play Super Mario 64. It still has some problems like the control, but even those issues have been fixed to an extent.

I always wanted to listen to the soundtrack without being the CD version, because most of the soundtrack that was uploaded into YouTube was explicitly the CD one or a more slower version of the Ingame one, so I'm so glad we finally have the Ingame version.

drake the type to say "ROASTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" after writing his arguement
This game was my childhood, this game in 2013 (when I was born) Was a bang for me because I never played Mario before, so I had a Nintendo 64, a Nintendo DS, And a PlayStation 3. So I used first the DS, and next the Nintendo 64, and I had 20 for some reason, And one save file that had the amount of Stars I collected. And I still remember This game and it's remake for DS, and here's my opinion: I think this game needed to make the world of the game GIGANTIC, but with the results of the game I'm happy with the experience it brings to me, (I didn't needed to write too much ._.)

Damn! I agree with most of your points on the games quality itself. I think it if highly overrated and is pretty bad. But isn't this taking it a bit far? If someone can enjoy a game it probably wasn't someone else's opinion. Even if an almost universally liked game kinda sucks, isn't the important thing that it brought people together?
Damn, that's crazy. Dunno what you're doing here on the soundtrack page then if you dislike the game and its soundtrack so much. Just don't play it.
Also, you probably shouldn't be so aggressive just because people like a popular game. Tons of people genuinely enjoy playing it, and it isn't just some "this guy likes it so I'm gonna like it too" thing. And I'm saying this as someone who personally feels that the game is mediocre.
Yeah, your probably right. I get really aggressive when talking about this game. There are tons of other games that I think are bad that are super popular but I never get mad when people say they are good. I don't know exactly why this one ticks me off so much but I guess it's just my terrible experience with this game and how disappointed I was when I first played it.

Not a big fan of the soundtrack or the game. The game is extremely overrated and is hailed as a great game mostly because of nostalgia. The restricted camera controls and Mario's overall slipperiness pared with the terrible and sometimes sparatic level design don't help this game.
no, the reason why people love this game is because it was the first 3D mario game to exist, it also REVOLUTIONIZED gaming as a whole and because of the gameplay, it is an overall very impressive game for the N64, sure it may not be graphically as good for today's standards compared to '96's standards but it's an impressive game especially for the 90s because in the 90s we were still getting 2D mario games like Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island (it's not really a mario game but the title implies that it is [for those who don't know the full title is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]), this game marked a place in the timeline of gaming
