Access to Classified Information (Military) Law and Legal Definition
Access to classified information is the ability and opportunity to obtain knowledge of classified information. Many military jobs require access to classified information, regardless of where one is assigned. A person is having access to classified information when s/he is permitted to gain knowledge of the information. A person in certain position is expected to gain classified information. However, a person does not have access to classified information by being in a place where classified information is kept, when security measures prevent them from gaining knowledge of the information. In order to have access to classified information, the person must obtain the appropriate security clearance and the need to know the information to perform his / her duties.
