Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Buenas, ¿me puedes explicar un poco mejor la licencia "PD-two|PD-Peru-organization|PD-1923" que estás añadiendo en algunas fotos que he ido subiendo? Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Peru

I saw you made many improvements to Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Peru. I have marked up the new version for translation. This looks like a lot of changes, particularly in the tables, but should not result in any significant change to your content. If you care to translate the new version into Spanish, the steps are:

Click on "‎español" in the "Other languages:" bar above the text
Select the "Translate" tab at the top of the page, where you normally see the "Edit" tab
Work through each translation unit adding the Spanish equivalent to the English text
For each unit, when you press "Publish translation" your version is saved. You can stop translating and go onto something else any time you want.

It has been pointed out to me that most of the release generator has already been translated. It's just the landing page with the phrase "Welcome to the Wikimedia OTRS release generator! Duda pasaportes

Hola compañero! Otra vez aquí molestándote... pero tenía una duda sobre que dice la ley peruana sobre los pasaportes. He mirado la categoría correspondiente Category:Passports of Peru porque tengo un pasaporte de los 90 escaneado listo para subirlo a Commons, pero le quiero poner la licencia correcta. Re. licencias gubernamentales

Un sinsentido claramente. Pues la idea de recomendar al gobierno me parece genial. La cuestión es que Wikimedistas del Perú aún está embrionario, no somos ni capítulo siquiera. Con lo cual es una de las ideas que se piensan impulsar una vez se alcance la constitución de capítulo, aunque quizás eso sea dentro de algún tiempo. Estaremos en contacto, seguramente. Saludos! Peru's color on FOP map

Hello! I lately noticed your updates to COM:FOP Peru. In your opinion, what might be the best color of Peru on File:Freedom of Panorama world map.svg in relation to COM:FOP Peru? Should it be dark green (including public interiors), or grass green (some public indoors). FOP Peru as it currently stands states that indoors are also covered, but there may be cases of indoors that might be "strictly reserved by their author." Por otro lado, creo que este puede ser también otro objetivo a tener en cuenta: SISTEMA DE ARCHIVO FOTOGRÁFICO del Congreso de la República del Perú, donde leemos: "El Sistema de Archivo Fotográfico permite a los usuarios la búsqueda, visualización y uso no comercial de las imágenes históricas del Parlamento, respetando el derecho al honor de las personas y el derecho de autor que le corresponde al Congreso de la República.". Te actualizo cómo van las gestiones: hemos enviado dos veces la carta a través de la Mesa de Partes de Presidencia, siendo en ambas ocasiones cerrado el expediente por falta de subsanaciones que no podíamos realizar. Por otro lado existe una vía abierta con la PCM, ya que nos remitieron una respuesta desde el Servicio de Atención Ciudadana que encauzarían la carta a quién corresponda. Todo esto hace un par de semanas (puedes leer el resumen de ello en la última acta de la reunión de WMPE). Vamos a ver si iniciamos una campaña en redes sociales, a la par que enviamos la carta a los directores responsables de las oficinas que creemos que deciden de estos asuntos. Ahora bien, vamos a intentar enviar una carta al servicio de Archivo Fotográfico del Congreso, a la dirección que viene en la web y a la Encargada del Sistema de Archivo Fotográfico del Congreso de la República (su mail nos lo fue facilitado el propio CM de la cuenta de Instagram del Congreso). En este caso, necesitaríamos que adaptases la carta a Presidencia para el Congreso, no se si tendrás tiempo para ello, pero sería interesante enviarle algo curioso y concreto para lograr cambiar esa licencia y la de Flickr. @MiguelAlanCS: Hola de nuevo, agradecería tu comprensión porque este mes estoy ocupado y solo estoy tomando algo de tiempo en tareas menores. Revisando el avance, va bien. Noto que para la carta hacia el Archivo Fotográfico del Congreso se puede enviar casi como está en la carta al gobierno, solo basta cambiar los remitentes y en lugar de "Gobierno abierto" se cambia el enfoque a "Parlamento abierto" (como este reporte). No veo necesario rehacer la carta porque al igual que la Presidencia, es una institución con el mismo nivel y todo lo escrito aplica también al Poder Legislativo. Sobre la carta de autorización es algo estándar, quizás olvidé añadir un minitutorial de cómo enviar a VRT (OTRS) bajo este formato, lo cual suena apropiado y conciso a los administradores de Commons (aunque sea en inglés o español, lo importante es el mensaje de la autorización). Hola. No me refería a a ese ejemplo concretamente, sino de ignorar esas licencias cuando obviamente estén mal licensiadas, como el ejemplo. Ed un repositorio muy amplio donde se pueden encontrar imágenes, como por ejemplo, de la época de Leguia, imágenes ya en el.dominio público por si antigüedad. Saludos!
