North American weather map

Bot status
[edit]Great work on the maps, but is there a reason for not getting bot status so as to not clutter recent changes? Dori | Talk 03:40, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Weather-Bot Pictures
[edit]Hi, is there any possiblity that these many pictures don`t occur on the latest file-List? I won´t say that they spam the list, but sometimes there´s no other effect. CU --Herrick 09:33, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Not the right way (copy of talk on WeatherBot discussion)
[edit]While the idea is good, I think that the way it is done should be modified. Imagine a bot that generates pictures of all quotes from all companies worldwide with graphs for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year, etc... It would be a complete waste of ressources. Wouldn't it be better to store the statistics and generate the needed picture on the fly when requested in an article. This would be much more flexible (changing the maps, putting it on top of other maps such as satellite, average temperature, height, etc...). Moreover, they are in English and would not fit in other Wikis. It would be better to include this bot in Commons and generate the localized maps in the proper language (with some caching if speed is a concern). What do you think ?
Oh I forgot, when you press "random file", you have 50% of chance of getting one of these weather maps, I find this quite annoying because I liked to pick a picture at random and add it in the articles... Dake 30 June 2005 17:56 (UTC)
- That's right, I also think the weather maps are kind of annoying since they flood Commons (see "Latest files"...) and are of not much use in any of the wikipedias, only for a very limited time on the wikinews site. I think being a global weather archive is clearly out of scope of Commons, and a separate weather wiki project should be started. --AndreasPraefcke 6 July 2005 07:41 (UTC)
- I agree with Andreas, this weather bot should be subject to a full discussion with a vote Dake 19:35, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
- As you can see above, when I point out my site of view some days before, it´s necessary to set an limit on this flood of pictures. --Herrick 18:21, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
- I also agree with Andreas. Stop it. Or use a Imagename like weather-today.jpg and overwrite the pics from yesterday.Kolossos 19:35, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
- I also agree with Andreas... I think a historical record of weather is fine for wikipedia or wikisource, but in image form? Why would it ever be useful to have a year's worth of weather data in jpeg format? Instead, we could find a place to update the information in tabular form and use a single image name that gets overwritten every day. --Quasipalm 13:44, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
- I agree with Andreas, this weather bot should be subject to a full discussion with a vote Dake 19:35, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Aus Blank.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Aus Blank.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. —LX (talk, contribs) 15:26, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.--gildemax 11:06, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
Image deletion warning | Image:Aus_C_10Feb2005at0657UTC.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Please help replace this outdated license
[edit]Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.
The images we would like you to check are:

File:WynnSign.JPG has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called David Vasquez. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name David Vasquez~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
