Subject: xserver-xorg: X server doesn't honour some xmodmap settings
Date: Fri, 6 Jul 2007 18:29:34 +0200
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.2-5
Severity: normal

I have:

vin:~> xmodmap -pke | grep ' 22 '
keycode 22 = BackSpace 0x1000017

so that a Shift-BackSpace sends a Ctrl-W, but xev shows that
Shift-BackSpace just sends a BackSpace. Similarly, I have:

keycode 67 = eacute Eacute

and so on, so that when I hit the F1 key, I get the character 'é'
and Shift-F1 should give 'É'. But Shift-F1 gives 'é'.

I have tried with and without

        Option "XkbDisable" "true"

in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, and replacing

        Option "XkbRules" "xorg"

by

        Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"

but this doesn't change anything.

I didn't have such a problem on another machine (but with an older
Xorg version).

Could you try downgrading some packages to Etch? For instance
xbase-clients or xserver-xorg-core. If it doesn't help, any idea when
the bug appeared and what has been upgraded at this time?

Brice

In fact, I have the same packages on my PowerBook, but the bug isn't
present there. So, I doubt that this comes from the package version.

The bug has always been there on this machine, which was installed
in October 2006.

I've just noticed that on the machines where the bug has never been
present have:

        Driver "keyboard"

but on the machine where the bug is present, I have:

        Driver "kbd"

I can't test "keyboard" on this machine now. But could this make
a difference? ("kbd" was chosen automatically at install time.)

I confirm that this solves the problem. In fact, I need both

       Driver "keyboard"

and

       Option "XkbDisable" "true"

So, Shift-F1 now produces 'É' as expected, and switching virtual
console with Ctrl-Alt-F1 for instance now also works. But this
workaround prevents my from upgrading xserver-xorg-input-keyboard:

xserver-xorg-input-keyboard (1:1.2.1-1) UNRELEASED; urgency=low

The old "keyboard" driver has been removed and is now superseded by the
"kbd" driver. The corresponding "InputDevice" section in the xorg.conf
configuration file should be updated by replacing "keyboard" with "kbd"
  on the "Driver" line.

severity 432011 important
thanks

Setting to important since:
  1. this is blocking upgrades (the working driver has been removed
     from the latest xserver-xorg-input-keyboard versions);
  2. this is a regression;
  3. there is no workaround (AFAIK).

In case it's helpful, here's another xmodmap that fails under squeeze's
xserver-xorg-input-kbd 1:1.4.0-2.

The xmodmap below used to:
   * Make caps lock a CTRL (that part still works)
   * make the left CTRL key a Mod2 key (that part doesn't work)
   * make the left ALT key a Mod1 key (that part doesn't work)

keycode 109 = Alt_R

This was a working xmodmap used in production for decades. It now fails
with this error:

X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 118 (X_SetModifierMapping)
  Value in failed request: 0x17
Serial number of failed request: 21
Current serial number in output stream: 21

I agree with the original bug reporter: this is a regression. If
xmodmap was going to be broken in this way, it should have been
officially deprecated or something to let users know.
