I will say, as is typical for me, I had no plan when making this bench and after making this once, I would do things differently, but here is a tutorial on how I made this one.
I started with 4 "legs" cut from bunk bed posts I found in an alley garbage.
I then figured out what sized boards I needed by laying them out. These are all pallet boards and yep, that is bird poop on there--I sanded a little of it off, but painted over it too--texture!
I then painted the boards.
Next I cut some 2x4 type boards that are also from pallets. I cut the thinner, painted pallet boards into pieces, at least 2 of the 3 for the sides. I screwed these to the 2x4 pieces, leaving room for the legs on the ends.
I screwed the legs on which created 2 panel pieces.
I then added end pieces to make a box.
Now here is where those 2x4 pieces probably could have been done differently, as well as the bottom, but what I did was added pieces to create the bottom of the box. I screwed the bottom boards into the 2x4's first, which was very secure, but then that made it so I had to find or cut the right width pieces for the rest of it. I screwed those in from the sides.
Lastly, I added a plywood top. This piece of ply was screwed to one of the pallets I picked up. I hinged it on and waxed it with dark wax.
(Hmm, I need a pedicure.) Even though the construction wasn't perfect, I was happy with the finished product and so was the sweet college girl who bought it.
Oh my gosh...painting over bird poop for texture is a first for me. That is hilarious. It turned out great. I love Yellowstone too. Plan on going next summer again. Are you still planning a trip to the Oregon coast this summer as well?
ReplyDeleteLove it Becky! ... I bet the college girl did too!

I love it!! Thank you for showing us how you created it!
ReplyDeleteLove all your stuff...something about the old wood, and the way you paint. It wouldn't sell around here... but I sure do love it!

I think it turned out lovely, even if you could have made it easier on yourself in the building process. I love the paint effects you used on the pallet boards. Really nice.
ReplyDeleteI am in love with this project. Great job.

get out! this is gorgeous - you've got skills girl I say - skills!
ReplyDeleteOMG, lol...bird poop texture! Ok that might have been a little TMI...but I love this storage bench just like it is, texture and all! Just having a little fun with you, great tutorial and a fabulous project as always!
ReplyDeleteI love it, Becky. I had to laugh at you painting over the poop. I've done that. Very organic. lol
ReplyDeleteI love it! Great idea to add storage! Thanks for the inspiration you give me every week!
ReplyDeleteGraat job!Thanks
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit behind on this blog...but would you mind sharing what you would have done differently....so I can learn from your experience? :) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love this. I think a storage bench would be perfect to have in a family room because when company comes over I can just throw everything in there. I really like the mismatched panels too.

I have to place my chairs out the house because i have made new sofa's but i am not finding the place to put it. Then i come up with an idea of making a yard near the house and place the steel Shed over it because steel shed is more strong then wooden shed and it has a long life. My chairs would remain stored in the shed.
ReplyDeleteMost of what I love about your projects is the paint technique you use! Is it just basically "dry brush" painting over rough cut wood? I am going to be building...with the help of a friend...a small cabin next summer. I am on a tight budget and am using reclaimed materials. It will be rustic. I think some of the furniture you make would fit right in! I am going to try your painting technique so any words of wisdom would be helpful! I am going to spend today "reclaiming" cedar siding, oak flooring, and pantry shelving, and other items from a house that is being torn down soon...day one on procuring items to be used in building cabin!
