Follow Terri Lyne on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/TerriLyneMusic
For more than two decades, drummer, producer and vocalist Terri Lyne Carrington has crafted an eclectic brand of jazz that incorporates elements of bebop, soul, funk and much more. Since her debut in 1989, the GRAMMY®-nominated artist has established a reputation for assembling artists of varying styles and perspectives to create music that adheres to the traditions of jazz yet speaks to a much broader and more diverse audience. Carrington brings this same diverse sensibility to her new recording The Mosaic Project, an album that once again gathers a myriad of voices and crystallizes them into a multi-faceted whole that far outweighs the sum of its parts.

March 4, 2020 | Suraya Mohamed -- "I hope that you can enjoy this music because it can be heavy," drummer and bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington told the NPR crowd gathered for this Tiny Desk. "We've tried to figure out a way to make it feel good and still give these messages."
In the jazz world, Carrington is a celebrity — a 40-year professional musician who's won Grammy awards and performed with a seemingly infinite list of jazz dignitaries such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Geri Allen. An outspoken activist, teacher and mentor, she is also the founder and artistic director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, a multidisciplinary program whose motto is "Jazz Without Patriarchy."
Carrington visited the Desk with her current band, Social Science, a collaboration with pianist Aaron Parks and guitarist Matthew Stevens (both performing here). In the works for some time, their project culminated in 2016 when the cultural divisiveness brought on by the presidential election inspired the trio to take action. "I think there's an awakening happening in society in general," Carrington writes on her website, "I feel a calling in my life to merge my artistry with any form of activism that I'm able to engage in."
This performance features music from the band's new album, Waiting Game. It's story-filled, groove-music performed by a group of accomplished musicians who improvise, rap and sing over complex but highly crafted and accessible instrumental motifs. A perfect synthesis of jazz, indie rock and hip-hop influences, the four songs they played address important, culturally relevant protest narratives: mass incarceration, collective liberation, police brutality and Native American genocide.
The third tune, "Bells (Ring Loudly)," written by Parks and Carrington, features actor Malcolm Jamal Warner who also wrote the spoken word. Carrington had just seen the Philando Castile shooting and her powerful lyrics imagined what she would say to the offending police officer.
"You took my love away from me.
I wanna know how did it feel to watch him tremble and bleed.
Tell me what gives you the right to kill so senselessly?
And when you're alone do you ever think of him or pray for his peace?"
"There is so much we can be angry about but you can't really stay there," Carrington told NPR. "Instead, you can reach somebody on a human level."

GRAMMY-WINNING DRUMMER/COMPOSER/PRODUCER TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON RELEASES HOTLY ANTICIPATED MOSAIC PROJECT: LOVE AND SOUL
Release spotlights vocalists Oleta Adams, Natalie Cole, Paula Cole, Lalah Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Ledisi, Chanté Moore, Valerie Simpson, Nancy Wilson, Jaguar Wright and Lizz Wright
After receiving worldwide praise and a GRAMMY for Best Jazz Vocal Album for her 2011 disc, The Mosaic Project, drummer extraordinaire Terri Lyne Carrington releases its hotly anticipated follow-up, The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL, on August 7, 2015 via Concord Records. (International release dates may vary)
Like its predecessor, The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL presents Carrington leading a rotating cast of superb female instrumentalists and vocalists that includes Oleta Adams, Natalie Cole, Paula Cole, Lalah Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Chanté Moore, Valerie Simpson, Nancy Wilson, Jaguar Wright and Lizz Wright, as well as saxophonist Tia Fuller, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen; bassists Meshell Ndegoecello and Linda Oh; and keyboardists Geri Allen, Patrice Rushen and Rachel Z.
On The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL, Carrington juxtaposes her salute to female artists by paying homage to various male artists who have either influenced her professionally and/or informed her musicality, such as Nick Ashford, George Duke, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Luther Vandross and Bill Withers. “Whenever I do something that celebrates women, I never want it to feel like it’s something that excludes men,” she explains. “On this record, I consciously wanted to celebrate the various relationships women have with men either through original songs of mine or cover songs by male composers and song writers.” The male presence and perspective on The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL is even more realized by Billy Dee Williams, who contributes insightful spoken-word interludes through the disc.
Carrington’s musicianship has already catapulted her into the upper echelon of jazz artists of her generation. But on The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL, her gifts as a producer, songwriter, and arranger emerge more to the fore with a collection of tunes that places a greater emphasis on her love for R&B. “When I grew up I wanted to be Diana Ross,” she says as she explains her wide musical influences that range from classic music and straight-ahead jazz to R&B and hip-hop. “I loved all forms of Black music and eventually started listening from a production standpoint, finding Missy Elliot, Q-Tip and Questlove to be some of my favorites.”

"Everything about this recording is about making a larger picture out of many various elements," says Carrington, who produced the 14-song set. "I assembled several friends - most of whom I've performed with in the past, and all of whom bring their own individual story - to help me create the big picture. For as talented as each of them are as individuals, when I put them all together, I have a much greater musical story - one that can be told in an interesting and compelling way."
Included on that list of friends are some of the most prominent female jazz artists of the last few decades: Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Sheila E., Nona Hendryx, Cassandra Wilson, Geri Allen and several others. Carrington says the emergence of so many great female jazz artists is what finally makes an album like The Mosaic Project possible, more so now than in decades past.

Fish Story
Sometime in the 1980s, Caspar Salmon's grandmother was invited to a gathering on the Welsh island of Anglesey, attended exclusively by people with fish surnames. Or so he says. Thirty years later, filmmaker Charlie Lyne attempts to sort myth from reality as he searches for the truth behind this fishy tale.

The surname Assheton has descended through the generations from the ancient Anglo-Saxon culture. Their name comes from having lived in the village of Ashton, Lancashire. The first part of the name, Ash, was originally given to a person who resided in an area where ash trees prospered. There are eighteen parishes and townships called Ashton in numerous counties and there are also various minor localities of this same name.
Assheton from England has its origins in Lancashire, where they held a family seat originally at Assheton, known as Assheton-under-Lyne. The manor of Middleton has an extensive history dating back to the de Lacy family. It passed through Thomas Plantagenet and then to the Kydales and the Bartons; and by the marriage of Sir Ralph Assheton, commonly called the 'Black Knight of Ashton,' with the last heiress of the Bartons, it was conveyed to the Assheton family....

★★★ About Name Translation ★★★
When translating names into Chinese, many factors come into play - culture, pronunciation and gender - to name just a few. A name translation that has the similar pronunciation is the first sign of quality translation.
The challenge comes in immediately since the same name can be pronounced differently in different source languages. This will result in different translation in Chinese.
For example, the name HARLEY is translated into different Chinese names based on origins and gender:
HARLEY (English) - 哈利 (hā lì) (male)
HARLEY (English) - 哈莉 (hā lì) (female)
HARLEY (French) - 阿莱 (ā lái)
HARLEY (Swedish) - 哈莱 (hā lái)
Chinese translation has a unique challenge. Chinese is used across many countries and regions. It also has many dialects and some of them are drastically different. This means even the same English name can be pronounced differently in Chinese in different regions.
For example, shown below, former US president Ronald Reagan's last name has these different translation:
REAGAN - 里根(lǐ gēn) (mainland China)
REAGAN - 列根(liè gēn) (Hong Kong)
REAGAN - 雷根(léi gēn)(Taiwan)
Currently, there is no single standard in name translation adopted across all Chinese-speaking regions. Among the several regional guidelines, the most widely adopted translation rules are developed by Chinese state-owned institution Xinhua News Agency (新华通讯社). These rules are presented as a set of YIYIN tables (译音表) which match source language syllables to Chinese characters. They are considered as the de facto standards in China and we see increasing adoption in many other Chinese-speaking regions.
In China, names translated with these YIYIN tables are considered FORMAL and are required to be used in all government publications and major media outlets.
For example, if your name is DAVID, there is no problem when you are traveling across Chinese-speaking regions and introducing yourself as 大卫(dà wèi) since this is a popular translation that everyone understands. But you should know that your name DAVID's official Chinese translation is 戴维(dài wéi) if you make a state visit to China as head-of-government. ;-)
*** All name translations presented in this channel are the result of applying these YIYIN tables (译音表) and additional name translation rules set by Xinhua News Agency. Although every reasonable effort is made to make this information accurate, these translations are provided for information purposes only. Use it for business at your own risk.
*** Please note that name translation and having a Chinese name (culturally localized with a Chinese last name and first name) are two different things.
