Sheet metal construction is the primary material used in aircraft manufacturing, characterized by aluminum-alloy, semi-monocoque, stressed skin construction. It is also widely utilized in various industries, including automotive and architecture, due to its versatility and ease of shaping. While sheet metal forming offers high production rates, it can incur high labor and tooling costs, with specific processes like superplastic forming having limitations in production speed and temperature suitability.

Sheet metal forming

Sheet metal construction

• Sheet metal aircraft construction is the most prevalent aircraft construction material by all measures, used extensively from jetliners to light, single
engine airplanes and kits over the past five decades. Furthermore, virtually all other aircraft types use sheet-metal construction to some degree - whether
an instrument panel on a composite aircraft, or a firewall on a wood or steel tube and fabric design.
• Common sheet-metal construction is most accurately described as "aluminum-alloy, semi-monocoque, stressed skin construction." This means that the
metal used is some form of aluminum-based alloy, and that the airframe sections are designed and built so that the outer skin itself is part of the
structure, with internal ribs, longerons, and bulkheads to distribute the loads. The metal parts are permanently joined with rivets or other fasteners.
Working principle:

• Basic principles of sheet metal forming

• "Forming technology" is a term which covers the extremely wide range of chipless forming production processes which are possible when presses are used.
Interested Internet users will find the basic principles and processes of forming technology in general form here. Our information concept has been deliberately
simplified to provide an insight into the press and process sequences without the need for in-depth knowledge. The following forming processes are used in the
production of body parts.
• With the use of the industrial manufacturing process, sheet metal is formed by working metal into flat and thin pieces. Sheet metal is one of the very convenient ways that is used
in metal working and it can be mended and cut into various shapes and dimensions. A wide range of products are manufactured with the use of sheet metal making it an essential
part of the modern world. Sheet metal varies in thickness. Its thickness is quantified by a measure known as its gauge. The metal will be thin if the gauge number is larger. You can
find sheet metal in the form of foil as well.
Applications:

• Sheet metal is used in automobile and truck (lorry) bodies, airplane fuselages and wings, medical tables, roofs for buildings (architecture) and many other applications.

• Sheet metal of iron and other materials with high magnetic permeability, also known as laminated steel cores, has applications in transformers and electric machines

• . Historically, an important use of sheet metal was in plate armor worn by cavalry, and sheet metal continues to have many decorative uses, including in horse tack. Sheet metal workers are also known as “tin bashers” (or “tin knockers”), a name derived
from the hammering of panel seams when installing tin.

• Advantages:

• The process of drawing is used for the production of shallow or deep parts.

• This approach is used when working with relatively simple shapes.

• This this process, the advantages are the possibility of high production rates. However, the disadvantages are high equipment and tooling cost throughout the projec

• Disadvantages

• However, labor costs can be high unless operations are automated.

• Superplastic forming is being used to produce complex shapes with fine detail and close tolerances.

• However, the disadvantages are that forming times are long, production rates are low, and the parts are not suitable for high-temperature use.
