BSc Nursing Informatics Group Assignment (Graded): BSc 2.

2
Course: Nursing Informatics
Due Date: 08/09/2025
Introduction
This assignment is designed to test your ability to apply the concepts and principles of nursing
informatics to a real world healthcare scenario. Your task is to act as a Nursing Informatics specialist
and propose a solution to a critical problem at a large hospital. This will demonstrate your capacity to:
1. Outline the concepts, principles, and theories in nursing informatics.
2. Adopt the safe, appropriate, and holistic care of patients by applying the nursing informatics
system in the nursing process as a framework.
3. Describe nursing in accordance with existing legal, ethical, and moral principles in the
application of information technology.
4. Provide patient care accurately and comprehensively with the aid of an information
technology system.
5. Participate in research with an experienced researcher utilising a nursing informatics system.
The Case Study
The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) is a large, busy facility with multiple specialized units. Its
current fragmented technology ecosystem leads to significant challenges for nursing staff, including:
• Medication Errors: The lack of a unified system forces nurses to manually transcribe orders,
increasing the risk of errors and delays in medication administration.
• Disjointed Patient Data: Patient information is scattered across different electronic health
records (EHRs), lab systems, and radiology systems. This makes it difficult for nurses to get a
comprehensive view of a patient's status.
• Inefficient Communication: Reliance on pagers, phones, and insecure text messages leads to
breakdowns in communication between nurses, physicians, and pharmacists.
• Lack of Analytics: The hospital is unable to generate meaningful reports on patient outcomes
or operational efficiency due to siloed data.
The Task
Your task is to write a professional report proposing a new, improved technology solution. Your
report should have three distinct parts.
Part 1: Systems Analysis and Problem Identification (25% of Marks)
• Explain the Problem: Choose one of the four issues from the case study. Use a simple
diagram or flowchart to illustrate the current workflow and data movement (or lack thereof).
• Identify Stakeholders: List the key people affected by this problem (e.g., bedside nurses,
nurse managers, physicians, pharmacists). Describe how the current workflow impacts their
ability to provide safe and holistic patient care.
Part 2: Solution Design and Ethical Considerations (35% of Marks)
• Describe Your Idea: Propose a new technology solution to fix the problem you identified in
Part 1. Give your system a simple, descriptive name (e.g., "Integrated Care Platform").
• Key Features: Describe at least two key features of your solution. Explain how these features
would make the nursing process more accurate and efficient.
• Legal and Ethical Considerations: Discuss how your proposed system would adhere to
legal and ethical principles. Specifically, explain how it would protect patient privacy and
ensure data security.
Part 3: Implementation and Research Plan (25% of Marks)
• Implementation Strategy: Outline a practical plan for how the hospital would introduce
your new system. Would it be a "Big Bang" launch or a phased roll-out? Justify your choice.
• Training Plan: Propose a simple plan for how the nursing staff would be trained to use the
new system, ensuring they can provide comprehensive care.
• Research Integration: Explain how your proposed system could be used to support nursing
research. Provide a simple example of the kind of data that could be collected and the type of
research question that could be answered.
Report Guidelines (15% of Marks)
• Your report must be professionally written, well-organized, and use clear headings and
subheadings.
• You must use a minimum of 5 reliable sources (e.g., peer-reviewed articles, books, reputable
websites) in your reference list.
• Font: Times New Roman, Size 12, Double-spaced
• Referencing: APA 7th Edition (minimum 8 credible sources)
• Structure:
• Title Page
• Introduction
• Main Body (organized under the five task areas)
• Conclusion
