Transport in the European Union
The chart shows CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre for various methods of transport in the European Union while
the pie chart shows European Union spending on transport . Flying by air produces by far the greatest CO2 emissions ,
approximately three times as much as passenger cars which are the next largest producers!
Very little is spent by the EU on air travel while roads make up more than half of the EU transport budget .
Trains produce about three times less CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre than passenger cars and eight times less
than air travel . Nearly a third of EU transport funds are spent on railways .
Ships are a clean form of transport and produce about the same amount of CO2 per passenger kilometre as trains do .
However , only 2 percent of EU funds are spent on ports . A further one percent is spent on inland waterways .
Coaches are the cleanest form of transport . Emissions of CO2 per passenger kilometre from coaches are half those of
buses . Buses emit less than half as much CO2 per passenger kilometre as cars . The European union spends 10 percent
of its transport budget on public transport , such as buses and coaches .

Commuting inside and outside London in 2009
The graphs show the time it takes employees to commute to their workplaces , and the mode of transport they use .
Figures are given for both inside and outside London .
For the majority of the UK , the number of commuters decreases as commuting time increases . Almost half of the
commuters take less than 15 minutes to get to their place of work , while only around 3 percent spend over an hour
commuting . Indeed , three quarters of commuters outside London reach work within half an hour . In London , the trend is
very different . The figures show that it takes much longer to get to work . Less than half of the commuters have reached
work within half an hour , with the percentage reaching work in less than fifteen minutes significantly lower than the
percentage reaching work in thirty minutes . Moreover , forty percent of people spend up to an hour commuting , with an
equal proportion in the 30-45 minute bracket and the 45-60 minute bracket , and a further sixteen percent commute for
over an hour – over five times the proportion outside London .
Regarding the mode of transport , the car is dominant both inside and outside London , significantly so outside London ,
where other modes of transport account for less than a quarter of journeys . Of the other modes of transport , walking and
taking the bus are more common than cycling , taking the train and using the underground . Inside London , the car
accounts for about one third of commuting journeys . However , public transport is used for about half of the journeys , the
train and underground being more popular than the bus .

Single parent families in the UK
From the data we can see that a number of significant changes have taken place in the proportion of single parent
families , headed by both women and men , in recent years in the UK .
Generally speaking , since 2000 there has been a marked upward trend in the numbers of single parent families ,
particularly in the under 60s , and this trend has been most pronounced , perhaps not surprisingly , for women . In 2000 ,
for example , only around 3 % of families were headed by a woman on her own . By 2010 , this figure had shot up to 7 % ,
and it is predicted to increase further by 2030 , possibly doubling from the 2010 figure to 14% .
A similar , though less pronounced , trend is apparent for men under 60 . Again in 2000 , single parent families headed by
men accounted for about 5 % of the total but by 2010 this figure had risen to 6 % , with future predictions putting the figure
at 9 % by 2030 .
The pattern for single parents over the age of 60 is somewhat different . The proportion headed by women rode slightly
between 2000 and 2010 , however a levelling off of this trend is predicted over the next 10 years , followed by a significant
increase from 2020 to 2030 . Interestingly , the proportion of single parent families headed by men has changed markedly
over recent years . In fact this has been the most common type of single parent family . Between 2005 and 2010 for
example , this category accounted for 11 % of the total . Future predictions however forecast a significant fall in this
percentage to around 8 % by 2030 .

The responsibility of bringing up children should be shared equally between mother and father.
The idea that both parents should contribute actively to bringing up their offspring would seem hard to dispute . This does
not mean however that all tasks in the child rearing process should be shared equally .
The idea of tasks being shared equally between parents contains several assumptions . One assumption is that both
parents have equal amounts of available time and are both available to do what is required at the time it is required .
Clearly this is often not the case . If , for example , a child needs help with some homework one evening and one parent is
required to work late , the task falls to the other parent . Therefore , despite genuine attempts to share duties equally , it
will not always be practically possible to do so .
The second assumption which is implied by the idea of sharing tasks equally is that both parents are equally well
prepared or skilled to do all tasks . Again this is clearly not the case most of the time . For instance , it may be that the
mother is a teacher and able to provide the kind of support the child needs with their homework more effectively than the
father .
In theory , perhaps the best approach would be to first decide what the child needs at any given time , and secondly to
assess which parent is in the best position to provide this need . This approach is aimed at using the parental resources
most effectively , rather than 'equally' .
In conclusion , it would seem that the 'equality' point of view may not always be in the child's best interest . A more
effective approach might be for couples to agree on how they can best use their resources . Even if this is accomplished
however it is unlikely to be achievable constantly due to practical restraints .

In what ways can new technology help maintain our traditions?
We often hear than new technology is in conflict with our traditions . The new is replacing the old . Are there any ways
however in which new technology can help support our traditions and help keep them alive ?
First of all , it seems that technology can help preserve our traditions by providing a channel of education for them . For
instance , the Internet is now an established provider of education . From a good website we can learn a lot about our
past and our traditions . This can be brought to us in interesting ways if the website has interactive learning activities . In
addition , this technology can be made available in our schools , and homes , quite easily .
A second way in which today's technology can help is by keeping us informed . Our traditions are kept alive by us
continuing to carry them out and celebrate them . Again as a result of the Internet , and mobile phones , it has never been
easier to inform people of upcoming events and to spread the news to a large number of people quickly , easily and at
little cost .
Finally , it could be argued that modern technology saves us time . We can do a lot of tasks much more quickly than in the
past . In theory therefore we should have more time to devote to traditional activities . Whether we choose to do so or not
however rests with the individual .
In conclusion , there would seem to be several ways in which new technology can help us to preserve our traditions
particularly by educating and informing us . As in many other aspects of our life however , it is up to us if we decide to
employ the technology in this way or not .

There are certain things in the world which we simply should not try to understand.
It seems that on the issue of how much we should try to understand about our world , there are two schools of thought .
Some people argue in favour of acceptance rather than understanding , while others prefer a more scientific approach
which supports curiosity and research into all things . Can the former opinion be justified ?
Some people argue that there are many things in this world that we will never be able to understand , no matter how hard
we try . For instance , can we ever really understand the universe ? Can we ever really understand our own existence ?
Can we ever be sure about fully understanding other people ? Why then , the argument goes , should we bother to try ?
Simply because we can not image being able to understand something however does not mean that we should halt all
attempts to do so . Even today , apparently , scientists have no idea as to why we blush . Letting others know when we
have done something wrong seems counter-evolutionary . However , if we were to discover the reason , it may lead to a
revelation about how our mind and body operate . New discoveries can take us to fascinating and exciting new places ,
and we can all potentially gain and develop from these discoveries . Of course we have no way of knowing where new
revelations will come from so we need to explore widely .
In conclusion , though it may often seem to us that some things are so complex that perhaps we should not even try to
understand them , it is only through understanding that we can gain insight and only from insight that we can truly develop
. The enormity of the task therefore is no reason to limit our areas of research .

Dear Sir / Madam ,
I read in last week’s edition of the White Horse News that you are keen to reward local people who have made significant
contributions to the community . I would like to put my mother , Mrs . Gillian Summerton , forward for this reward .
My mother is a schoolteacher , and has done much to enrich the lives of the young people in her care . In her free time ,
she continues to give up her time to help people . She runs a ladies’ choir which is a superb opportunity for local women
to get together and enjoy themselves . Moreover , the choir performs free of charge at charity events , and consequently
my mother has been fundamental in both raising large sums of money and bringing pleasure to people .
I know that my mother does not need a financial reward for her services to the community , as it gives her a lot of pleasure
. However , I’m sure that she would appreciate formal recognition for her work , perhaps in the form of a donation to her
preferred charity , the Red Cross .
Thank you for your attention ,

Benefits and disadvantages of mobile phones
Mobile phones have transformed the lives of nearly everyone on the planet in the last few years . They have made
communication easy and cheap between friends , family and businesses . The phones are not only used for speech and
text messages but increasingly to browse the internet , to read email , to play games or to pay for products . In many
countries , particularly those with slow network connections , the internet is something that happens on a mobile phone
rather than on a computer .
There are also disadvantages to using mobile phones . One is the potential health risk . While the information is not
conclusive some people living near to mobile phone transmitters report higher rates of cancer then elsewhere . Keeping a
powerful device transmitting waves and heat next to your ear for long periods of time may be harmful to heavy users of
mobile phones . There are also social problems related to mobile phone use . Walking around with a phone glued to your
ear may prevent you from interacting with other people while anti-social use on public transport or in the cinema has led to
many public environments , such as theatres and cinemas , requesting users to switch their phones off or to silent . There
are also technical issues with mobile phone use . Many areas do not have network connectivity and the reliability or audio
quality of the mobile service in other areas may fall well short of that provided by a landline .
Significant those these drawbacks may be , the huge convenience of the mobile phone will ensure that its use continues
to change our lives .

I should like to enjoy a healthier lifestyle although there are many factors that make this difficult. Like many people my
working life involves many hours sitting down at a computer screen. This leads to a lack of exercise and is bad for eyes
and body posture. Travelling to work by car does not help either. Outside work there is not always time to take exercise or
to prepare healthy meals. I know this kind of lifestyle affects my health and fitness and makes me more prone to suffer
from illness. It also makes me put on weight. To have a healthier lifestyle I need to change the routine of my daily life, for
example by cycling or walking to work instead of driving. I need to ensure more regular exercise even if this is only 10
minutes yoga in the morning. I also need to eat more carefully, especially fruit and vegetables, and not eat so much
convenience food or red meat. At work I should take regular breaks away from the computer to relax my eyes and stretch
my body. I plan to slow down and take time to enjoy simple pleasures like a well-cooked healthy meal or some sport in the
sunshine.

remember, though, it was near an airfield, and we always used to get excited when we saw the big orange windsock,
because we’d know we were nearly there.
We went there several times, always in the summer holidays, until I was about 10. I suppose after that, my parents
thought I was too old for it.
So, we used to stay there in a caravan, which was great fun. We had to collect water from the taps outside the shower
block and carry it back to the caravan. The caravans were all arranged around the edge of the field, so there was plenty of
room in the middle to play ball games. There was a climbing frame in the middle too. There was a cabin which would open
every evening at about 5 o’clock where we could buy sweets. During the day, we’d leave the site, of course, and go to the
beach or go walking and sightseeing. In the evenings we’d go back, and play board games in the caravan. It was good.
I’m not sure whether I’d like to go there again or not, because I’m worried it might have changed, and I’d be really
disappointed. Plus, it might be more fun to go there as a child, or as a parent. Otherwise it might be a bit boring.

I’d like to talk about the Willshire Wildlife trust. It’s a local charity which I support. It protects the wildlife in my local area. It
preserves natural areas like fields, lakes and rivers, where animals live, and it makes sure that the animals’ habitats are
safe from development. It also educates people about how to look after wildlife.
I’m interested in this charity because it is in my local area. There are lots of charities overseas that I could support, but
you never know how your donation is being spent. Because this is a local charity, I can visit the projects and even get
involved myself, if I have time. They organise quite a few events where you can help maintain forests and paths. I must
admit, I haven’t been on one yet, but whenever they send me a leaflet, I always say I will!
The charity raises money by asking people to donate money regularly, straight from their bank accounts. I first heard
about the charity because they had a stall at the entrance to the supermarket. They probably get money from other ways
too, but I’m not sure about that.
I think it is important to get involved in charity work. It’s important to remember people who are less fortunate than you, or
who are sick, poor or disadvantaged in some other way. And you can help people or animals that cannot help themselves.
But I think getting involved in charity work is fun too. You get to meet lots of people and go to different places. And you
can feel good about yourself.
