MUSC 3208: Original Composition

“Prelude for guitar”

Prelude for guitar based on the technique of Twelve-tone
Serialism. It is a traditional sonata form. This is a good opportunity
to experience and find some new elements in timbre and color by
using the tone row and operation.I apply the dynamic, time
signature, poly rhythmic and modulation that I learned from
“Advance Rhythm Study”.

• Tone Row: G# A G F B E D Eb Bb C# C F#.

• Operation: Prime,Inversion,Retrograde,Retro-Inversion.
• Sonata Form: Exposition, Development and Recap.

Theme 1.
The row of notes is P0 and P2. (Prime form).
Measure 1-5, introduction by using the harmonic pitches and the
rubato to express the freedom and introduce the music by Prime
form (P0) and continue to M. 3 with chord forms and triplets and
simple eight notes and quarter notes. Articulating the notes with
an accent followed by triplet forms.

Bridge 1.
The row of notes is RI1(Retro-Inversion).
M. 6-8, continued with the same pattern, introduced the lower
voice, and harmonic chord tones.

Theme 2.
The row of notes is P4 and P7.
M. 9-11, 5/4 time and then 4/4 change, introducing two part upper
and lower voices. 3 against 4, 5 aganins 4.
Bridge 2.
The row of notes is R4 (Retrograde) and P5.
M.12-15, with varieties and the tempo feel the swing.

Fuga.
The row of notes is P2, I2, P3, R3, I5 and RI 5
M.16-29,using the concept idea of fugue, applies to this two part
sequence: the first subject combines the tone row and starts the
new subject and the counter subject with the tone row of RI5.

Tremolo.

M.24 I am using the tremolo to create The effect row of notes as

fuga and has more articulation.

Recap.
The row of notes is P0, P2, RI1, P4 and P5.
M.30-32,the concept is combined with the aggregate of the tone
row in sequence, 2 parts, 12/8,4/4 and 5/4 time signature with the
return to the main theme. The coda explores the triplet feel with 2
parts rhythm sections.

Bridge 3 and 4.
The row of notes is RI1(Retro-Inversion) R4 (Retrograde) and P5.
M. 33-36.Continued with the triplet pattern , introduced the lower voice,
harmonic chord tones, sextuplet.I'm using 12/8 rhythm feeling then
back to 4/4.

Coda.

The row of notes is P0, P2, RI1, P4 and P5.

M.37-41The coda explores the triplet feel with 2 parts rhythm
sections. I am using the Quintuplet, septuplet for the coda and
ending.
The twelve-tone matrix.
