“Human flourishing in science and technology”
WHAT IS FLOURISHING? (REPORTER: REYES)
- Grow luxuriantly; thrive
- To achieve a success; prosper
WHAT IS HUMAN FLOURISHING? (REPORTER: REYES)
- “Ability to live a good life”
- To find fulfillment in our lives.
- To provide the conditions for humanity to flourish, we must be moving toward a
state of overall good physical and mental health for both individuals and society.
We believe that agency and self-determination, supported by solid social bonds,
are the foundations of human development. The various ways that thriving
manifests itself in the lives of individuals and across cultural contexts are
significant factors that we take into account when funding flourishing science.
WHAT IS IT? (REPORTER: FELICIANO)
- Human flourishing is the ability to live a good life. Rooted in Aristotelian ethics, it
values health intrinsically and applies universally to all human lives. Human
flourishing embraces our shared humanity and serves everyone’s interests. All
people should have the conditions for flourishing and realizing their ability to be
healthy. They can use their values, talents, and abilities in pursuit of their own
goals and health. (Human Flourishing—Health Equity & Policy Lab, n.d.)
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? (REPORTER: FELICIANO)
- Human flourishing is important because it promotes the growth, development,
and holistic well-being of individuals and populations. It serves as a moral basis
for what it means to be a human being. If we desire individuals’ abilities to
flourish, we will be better equipped to analyze and shape health policy and public
health. We can better achieve health equity worldwide. Having a thorough
understanding of the conditions that enable human flourishing will promote safety
and security in people’s lives. This includes health, economic, community,
financial, political, and more. (Human Flourishing—Health Equity & Policy Lab,
n.d.)
HOW DOES SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY AFFECT HUMAN FLOURISHING?
WHAT IS SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY? (REPORTER: VICTOR)
- Must be treated as part of human life that needs reflective and meditative
thinking.
- Must be examined for their greater impact on humanity as a whole.
REFLECTIVE THINKING
- We use reflective thinking in a way we use feedback, input, comments, reviews
to reach success. There are questions you ask yourself; what was easy? What
did I learn? How will I use it in the future? It means writing to help you better
understand something.
MEDITATIVE THINKING
- From which Heidegger argues we are 'in flight', is not focussed on utility but
rather on meaning. In order to be open to embrace the meaning behind our
decisions and actions, we must be able to release ourselves from our calculative,
technological, and scientific mind-set.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY IN HUMAN CIVILIZATION?
(REPORTER: FELICIANO)
- Science and technological advances have a significant impact on all the actions
of humanity.Scientific and technological innovations and discoveries, such as the
theory of the origins of the cosmos, the theory of evolution, and the finding of
DNA, have given mankind several hints regarding the progress of the human
race as a civilized and cultural species. Technology and science have had an
immeasurable impact on the development of our perception of society, our
knowledge of the world, and our perspective of nature.
- Humanity has developed a vast array of technologies and scientific discoveries
that have aided in the creation and advancement of civilizations throughout
history, boosted economic expansion, raised living standards for most people,
promoted cultural advancement, and had a significant impact on thought,
religion, and a variety of other human endeavors. Science and technology have a
significant and wide-ranging impact on contemporary society, having an impact
on a variety of fields including politics, diplomacy, defense, the economy,
medicine, transportation, agriculture, the development of social capital, and many
others. In every aspect of our existence, science and technology's products are
there.
Humans have altered the world and manipulated the environment for their own
advantage by using every individual's understanding for thousands of years. Science is
the methodical study of nature, and for the past 400 years, it has significantly increased
our understanding of our global surroundings. That understanding gives you the
capacity to do so. Technology is the means by which we use our scientific knowledge to
accomplish specific objectives. Technology can be really basic; the wheel is among the
oldest and most significant technological inventions. Anything that humans have made
to make use of our environment, such as cans, nails, hammers, and ropes, is
considered innovation.
It's easy to see how technology has fundamentally altered historical events and the
world in which we live. These outcomes may be proficient or extremely hazardous.
“Technology as a Mode of Revealing”
MARTIN HEIDEGGER (REPORTER: FELICIANO)
- German philosopher. Born in 1889; died in 1976
- Technology “as a way of revealing”
- Phenomenology and Existentialism
- Heidegger’s analysis of technology in The Question Concerning Technology
consists of three main ‘claims’:
(1) Technology is “not an instrument”, it is a way of understanding the world
(2) Technology is “not a human activity”, but develops beyond human control
(3) Technology is “the highest danger”, risking us to only see the world through
technological thinking.
TECHNOLOGY & REALITY? (REPORTER: VICTOR)
- Technology, according to Heidegger must be understood as a ‘way of revealing’
- According to Heidegger, it is “a way of revealing” The essence of technology is
not something we make; it is a mode of being, or of revealing. This means that
technological things have their own novel kind of presence, endurance, and
connections among parts and wholes. They have their own way of presenting
themselves and the world in which they operate.
- For Heidegger it is a way of understanding the world.
WHAT IS REALITY?
- According to Heidegger, it is not given the same way in all cultures
- Not something absolute that human beings can ever know once and for all
- Is relative in the most literal sense of the word – it exists only in relations
- Inaccessible for human beings. As soon as we perceive or to try to understand it,
it is not ‘in itself’ anymore, but a ‘reality for us’
HOW CAN TECHNOLOGY BE A WAY OF REVEALING? (REPORTER: REYES)
- Likewise, the essence of technology is by no means anything technological.
Thus, we shall never experience our relationship to the essence of technology so
long as we merely conceive and push forward the technology, put up with it, or
evade it. Everywhere, we remain unfree and chained to technology, whether we
passionately affirm or deny it. But we are delivered over to it in the worst possible
way when we regard it as something neutral, for this conception of it, to which
today we particularly like to pay homage, makes us utterly blind to the essence of
technology.
(REPORTER: FELICIANO)
- “Technology is not equivalent to the essence of technology. When we are
seeking the essence of “tree,” we have to become aware that that which
pervades every tree, as a tree, is not itself a tree that can be encountered among
all the other trees.
- According to Heidegger, there is something wrong with the modern, technological
culture we live in today. In our ‘age of technology’ reality can only be present as a
raw material (as ‘standing reserve’). This state of affairs has not been brought
about by humans; the technological way of revealing was not chosen by humans.
Rather, our understanding of the world—our understanding of ‘being’, of what it
means ‘to be’—develops through the ages. In our time, ‘being’ has the character
of a technological ‘framework’, from which humans approach the world in a
controlling and dominating way.
- What, then, is technology if it is neither a means to an end nor a human activity?
Technology, according to Heidegger, must be understood as “a way of revealing”
(Heidegger 1977, 12). “Revealing” is one of the terms Heidegger developed
himself in order to make it possible to think about what, according to him, is not
taught anymore. It is his translation of the Greek word alètheuein, which means
‘to discover'—to uncover what was covered over. Related to this verb is the
independent noun alètheia, which is usually translated as “truth,” though
Heidegger insists that a more adequate translation would be “un-concealment.”
This means that everything we perceive, think of, or interact with “emerges out of
concealment into unconcealment,” in Heidegger’s words. By entering into a
particular relationship with reality, reality is ‘revealed' in a specific way. And this is
where technology comes in, since technology is the way of revealing that
characterizes our time. Technology embodies a specific way of revealing the
world, a way in which humans take power over reality. While the ancient Greeks
experienced the ‘making' of something as ‘helping something to come into
being'—as Heidegger explains by analyzing classical texts and words—modern
technology is rather a ‘forcing into being’. Technology reveals the world as raw
material, available for production and manipulation.
