The Andean condor

This scavenger bird reaches sexual maturity between 5

and 6 years of age and nests between 1,000 and 5,000
meters above sea level, normally loving rock formations
that are very inaccessible.

The Andean condor, also the Cerros condor, Andean

condor, or simply condor (Vultur gryphus), is one of the
largest birds on the planet, a national symbol of Chile,
Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia, so it has a role very
important in the mythology and folklore of the Andean
regions. However, this emblematic bird is in danger of
extinction worldwide.

Threats to its conservation

The Andean condor is a threatened species, but its situation is
much better than that of its cousin, the California condor. The
International Union for Conservation of Nature labels the
Andean condor as a vulnerable species due to the decline in its
populations due to the loss of habitat and poisoning caused by
feeding on poisoned animals or by the poisoned baits that some
hunters and ranchers place. illegal.

Conservation measures

Current protection measures include the protection of the Andean condor through legislation, the
protection of its habitats, and rehabilitation programs for injured condors, a captive breeding
program, and a reintroduction program.

The Andean condor has been registered and is protected in 27 natural conservation areas.
Likewise, nine (9) private and public entities participate in the rehabilitation, captive reproduction,
and reintroduction program of the Andean condor.

consequences

Declared in danger of extinction and protected by National Law No.

22,421 on the Conservation of Wildlife, the main threat that affects the
Andean condor is the consumption of toxic baits, an illegal practice used
to control predatory species. The use of these baits not only endangers
the Andean condor, but all forms of life, including human health, in
addition to being inefficient for the control of predators, since it kills
animals with scavenging habits, allowing those that need to multiply.
They include livestock in their diets.

cause
If you don't get it, the bird will probably die or get sick. In 2018,
according to the last national census of this species, only 150
Andean condors were estimated in Ecuador. The loss of a male
condor dismantles a potential reproductive pair, generating an
imbalance in the population structure of the species.

¿how to help protect the Andean condor?

To preserve the Andean condor, from the Ministry of Environment and

Sustainable Development we promote the National Strategy Against the
Use of Toxic Bait, a work coordinated with environmental authorities and
other relevant actors in the fourteen provinces of the country with
distribution of this threatened species

characteristics

Habitat and habits: lives in mountainous terrain. It

glides on air currents, being able to reach more than
8000 m in height. When it glides, it keeps its wings
extended horizontally and the primaries spread like
fingers. It can travel speeds of up to 50 km/h.
