DISCUSSION
A. DEFINITION
Narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain and attract readers by presenting a story
or event that has a problem that causes conflict and at the end of the story there is a resolution
that can be a happy ending or even a sad ending.
B. SOCIAL FUNCTION
The social function of narrative text is to entertain / to amuse and to deal with actual or
vicarious experience in different ways. Narrative deals with problematic events which lead to a
crisis or turning point of some kind, which in turn finds a resolution.
C. GENERIC STRUCTURE
1. Orientation: the background of the story, describing the people involved in the story,
when and where the story took place
2. Complication: when problems arise in the story
3. Resolution: the crisis or problem is resolved, for better or for worse.
4. Re-Orientation: Optional (not required) may or may not exist.
D. TENSE
Narrative tenses are four tenses that we often use for talking about past events. The most
common of these is the past simple. The other three tenses, the past continuous, the past perfect
simple and the past perfect continuous.
Past simple, the simple past tense is a sentence that is used to tell events that
happened in the past and finished or ended in the past as well.
Past Continuous, the past continuous describes an action or event before the present,
which started in the past and continues at the time of the narrative. In other words,
this tense expresses an unfinished or complete event in the past.
2
Past Perfect Simple, the definition of past perfect tense is a change in the form of
the verb to describe that there was an action in the past that was completed before
another action (which was also in the past) occurred.
Past Perfect Continuous, past perfect continuous tense is a tense or verb form to
express an action (with a certain duration of time) or an event that was started and
is ongoing in the past, but is no longer happening now.
E. EXAMPLE OF THE TEXT
Once upon a time in a small village, there lived a young boy named Jack. He dreamt of
exploring the world beyond the village's borders. One day, he stumbled upon an ancient map
that led to a mysterious treasure hidden in the nearby mountains. Excited and curious, Jack
embarked on an adventurous journey to find the treasure, facing numerous challenges and
meeting new friends along the way.
In the end, Jack not only discovered the treasure but also learned valuable life lessons about
courage and perseverance. After returning to the village with the treasure, Jack became a local
legend, inspiring others to follow their dreams. He shared his experiences with the villagers,
and they celebrated his bravery and determination. From that day forward, the village thrived
with newfound hope and adventurous spirits.
And so, the tale of Jack's daring quest and the treasure he found continued to be told for
generations to come, reminding everyone that even the most ordinary individuals could
achieve extraordinary things with determination and a courageous heart.
