Questions 11 – 15

Concert in a living room
Music journalist Ned Blake reports on an unusual concert he went to in the US
I went to a concert in New York recently. It wasn’t the kind of live music event I’m used to, though,
because it took place in a room in someone’s flat. It was a ‘Living room gig’, a concert arranged by a
network of music lovers who organise shows in small private venues all over the world.
Four hundred people had applied online to attend the event, without knowing who the performers
were or where they were going to play. Only fifty of us were successful. As I know very few people in
this city, the email confirming my place in the audience and giving me the address also offered an
exciting social opportunity. As well as an evening out, it was a kind invitation to a stranger’s home.
When I arrived, I spoke to the organiser, Jane Holmes. She told me that the idea had first come from
two friends who loved music and had got tired of going to concerts where lots of people in the
audience were chatting rather than concentrating on the performances. They thought there just had
to be a better way of doing things. So they decided to have a concert in their own living room,
creating a listening experience that people couldn’t find anywhere else.
Before the show started, all the tables and chairs had been taken out of the room. I sat on the floor
with the rest of the audience and Jane informed us of the three rules for the evening: no talking or
texting during the performance, no leaving before the end. The performers looked nervous. I realized
how much scarier it is to sit on a chair and sing to fifty people than to play to five hundred in a large
hall.
When the first group began, it was immediately obvious that the performers’ voices were what
mattered, and the instruments gently supported them. The groups that followed played in a wide
variety of musical styles. The musicians and their songs were unknown to me and to most other
people there. However, as the final song was being played, we all clapped along. All in all, it was an
interesting experience.

The world’s most famous bicycle race
The Tour de France is the biggest event in the worldwide cycling calendar. It is a bicycle race lasting
