Engineering Students' AV Project

This document is a submission for an autonomous vehicle project called "Monsoon 2019". It was submitted by three students - Arvind, Rajesh, and Sandeep - under the supervision of Mr. Aakash Sinha. The project aims to develop an indigenous autonomous bot capable of fully navigating without human intervention using machine learning and various sensors. Each student brings experience in different areas like machine learning, drivetrain design, and software development. The goal is to test sensor combinations and algorithms to create an efficient and cost-effective autonomous system.

ABSTRACT
Autonomous vehicles for long have been a subject of wonder. From a figment of imagination of
a sci-fi author to realities of road, these technological marvels have sure travelled a long
distance. In their current form, they rely heavily on an array of sensors, like LiDAR, SONAR,
Ultrasonic, and in case of majority of such vehicles on roads, all of them. One more feature,
which helps in making this technology more realistic and a worthy replacement of human
drivers, is Machine Learning. Both the technologies combine provide automation to the vehicles
on much higher level than commercial vehicles provide. These levels (six - defined from zero to
five) are set according to standards set by Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE Standard
J3016). One issue with such heavy reliance on exotic technologies such as LiDAR is the
increased cost of vehicle and compromises in terms of design. Through this project we not only
aim to cut the cost and improve the design of such vehicles, but we also try to explore various
machine learning algorithms which suit the requirement of developing autonomous vehicle, in
order to make them safer and better alternative for the future. In this effort, our priority is to
develop an indiginous autonomous bot, capable of fully navigating itself without any
(Autonomous Level 5)/with minimum (Autonomous Level 4) human intervention, while
performing all the driving functions on its own(Autonomous Level 3 and above). We will put to
test various combinations of sensors and different algorithm and come up with the most efficient
and cost effective system, which can then be scaled up to various sizes.

Each member of the project has industrial experience in various compartments of the project.
1. Arvind N V S (Machine Learning, Designing):
Will be working on developing the machine learning algorithm for identification of the
surroundings while taking inputs from various sensors comprising of the machine vision
module. He will also be designing the rover.
2. Rajesh Polamarasetty (Drivetrain, Embedded Systems, Quality Management):
Will be working on developing the drivetrain for the rover and ensuring that various
quality standards are met during the project. He will also work on the steering mechanism
using vectoring.
3. Sandeep R V S (Software Development, Embedded Systems):
Will be working on developing the software for easy interfacing with the rover, so that all
the modules viz. Machine Learning model and the drivetrain are in sync. He will also be
ensuring the sensor integration with software, so that the input to machine learning model
is accurate.

All the three members are also experienced in fabrication and manufacturing and will be
contributing towards the fabrication of the model.
