ACADEMIC SESSION 2015/2016
TEST SOLUTION
1. (a) Explain the differences between a sample and a population
A population is the totality of all subjects under study.
A sample is a subgroup of the population.
(b) Name the 4 basic sampling methods
Ramdom Sampling, Systematic Sampling, Stratified Sampling, Cluster Sampling
(c) Give an example each of nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio data
Nominal- Hair colour
Ordinal - Test Grades, A, B, C, D, F
Interval- Temperature
Ratio- Weight
2.
In a recent year, the number of murders in 25 selected cities is as shown.

(c) Based on (a) and (b), what can you say about the distribution of the data?
3. (a) Given the following data
421 395 314 294 289 253 242 238 235 199
(i)
Construct a boxplot
(ii)
Comment on the shape of the distribution
Rightly/positively skewed distribution.
(iii)
Identify any outliers.
IQR= Q3-Q1=314 -238=76
Q1-1.5(IQR)=238-1.5(76)=124
Q3+1.5(IQR)=314+1.5(76)=428
There are no outliers as all data are between 76 and 428.
(b) Data Set 1 has a mean of 3386.6 and a standard deviation of 693.9 while Data Set
2 has a mean of 4997.8 and a standard deviation of 803.2. Which data set is more
variable? Explain.
(c)
The mean time spent per day online is 3 hours while the standard deviation is 32
minutes. Using Chebyshevs theorem, find the range in which at least 88.9% of the
data will lie.
4.
(a) If 85% of all people have black hair and 6 people are selected at random, find the
probability that at least 1 of them has black hair.
P( at least 1 has black hair)= 1 P (all have black hair)
= 1-(0.15)6=0.9999886
(b) There are 6 seniors, 4 juniors and 2 sophomores at a meeting. If a committee of 3
is to be formed, find the probability that 1 each will be selected.

be made if repititions are not allowed?
