Cost of Allstate Renters Insurance

According to Quadrant Information Services in 2024, the average renter who buys coverage through Allstate pays $13.04 per month. This is below the national average: the average U.S. renter pays about $14.08 each month for renters insurance, but rates may vary by state.

Allstate Discounts

Allstate offers a limited range of discounts renters can take advantage of to save on coverage.

  • Multi-policy: From business insurance to auto insurance, Allstate offers nearly every type of insurance coverage you might need. If you bundle your renters insurance with another current Allstate policy, you can save on both policies.
  • Retired: If you’re over the age of 55 and retired, you’ll enjoy lower premium rates.
  • Autopay: If you enable autopay premium deductions, you’ll save on renters insurance.

When compared to other providers, Allstate offers fewer discounts, and potential customers can struggle to qualify for them. However, if you’re already an Allstate customer, you might be able to use that loyalty to gain discounts across policies.

Allstate Policy Coverage

Like most renters insurance providers, Allstate’s standard renters insurance policies include multiple coverages.

  • Personal property damage: Personal property damage covers the cost of repairing and replacing your things in the event of a covered loss. Allstate’s personal property coverage runs between $15,000 and $100,000 in most states.
  • Personal property liability coverage: This covers legal expenses and judgments against you if you damage someone’s property and they sue you. Allstate’s personal property liability coverage is between $100,000 and $300,000 per occurrence.
  • Personal medical liability coverage: This coverage is for legal expenses and judgments if someone is injured on your property and sues you for negligence. Allstate offers medical liability coverage between $1,000 and $5,000 per person injured.

Additional Coverage

Allstate has the following add-on coverages to its renters insurance:

  • Scheduled personal property coverage: This covers expensive or especially valuable items like jewelry and artwork.
  • Identity theft restoration: This covers the cost of charges made on your credit card or other expenses after your identity is compromised.
  • Flood insurance: Like all homeowners insurance policies, Allstate’s renters insurance does not cover flood damage. This rider extends your standard renters insurance coverage to include losses caused by standing water that enters your home from the outside. (Water damage from a broken pipe is already covered.)

Allstate Renters Insurance Reviews

Allstate is a major insurance company with a network of independently operated agencies. This means that the specific level of customer service quality you’ll receive will depend on your location. The good news: reviews of Allstate show that the company is reputable. With more than 90 years in business, Allstate has a Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating of A+.

While Allstate is a well-known insurance provider, its customer reviews are less than satisfactory. Almost all its reviews are negative — though some customers report positive experiences with customer service team members. Most complaints deal with rejected claims and rejected appeals.

"I would like to thank my Allstate representative…She’s very professional and knowledgeable about the services that this company has to offer. She made me and my daughter feel at ease to find a policy that would best suit our needs. She made us feel like family." —Rhonda via Trustpilot

"I have been a client of Allstate for over 10 years and my agent is always willing to help me. Even got my homeowners insurance policy through them…" — Luz via Trustpilot

"I had [Allstate] for almost 20 years…I never filed a claim till my home was vandalized. They denied my claim…[I feel] the government should look into fraudulent companies…Stay away from this company!"—Fausta via Trustpilot

"My daughter's frozen water pipe claim occurred [a month and a half ago]. Allstate has done nothing, the worst claim service I've witnessed — all they do is keep assigning new adjusters instead of handling a claim professionally."— Melissa via Trustpilot

The Bottom Line

While Allstate sells affordable and convenient renters insurance for current Allstate customers, it may not be the best choice for those shopping for insurance for the first time. Allstate offers fewer customization and discount options when compared to insurtech companies like Lemonade, and pricing is on the higher end of the average for the industry. However, there’s no denying that Allstate is a reputable choice for renters insurance, and its discounts can make seniors in particular feel good about their choice.

How We Gather Cost Data

We at the MarketWatch Guides Team gathered renters insurance quotes for the providers in this article using data from Quadrant Information Services. Quadrant is a leading source of property and casualty insurance solutions and data.

The sample renter our quotes are based on is a 30-year-old single male with good credit and no prior claims history. Our sample policies featured a $1,000 deductible and the following coverage and limits:

  • Personal property: $25,000
  • Loss of use: $7,500
  • Liability: $100,000
  • Medical payments: $500

For each provider, we gathered a quote for 50% of the ZIP codes in every state the provider is licensed in. We used the most populous ZIP codes for our study. We took the average of these individual quotes to calculate a national average premium per provider.

In some cases, cost data for a top renters insurance company isn’t offered in Quadrant’s database. To gather price information for these providers, we manually pulled quotes directly from insurers’ websites or representatives. We used the same sample homeowner demographics and comparable policy details for more than 20 ZIP codes across the U.S.

Our sample rates are for informational purposes only. Actual premiums will vary.
