Allstate Pet Insurance Review and Pricing (2026)

Allstate is known for offering auto, home and life insurance policies — but what about pet insurance? The company doesn’t underwrite pet insurance policies. Rather, Allstate refers customers to Embrace, an unaffiliated pet insurance provider that offers comprehensive pet coverage, based on our review.

We at the MarketWatch Guides team researched Embrace plans to give pet owners seeking a policy through an Allstate referral an idea of how policies stack up against the competition.

Our Thoughts on Allstate Pet Insurance

Founded in 1931, Allstate is a long-standing insurance company that offers an array of products such as auto and homeowners policies. It does not sell pet insurance directly but has a referral relationship with Embrace, which offers pet insurance policies. Our team gave Embrace 4.8 out of 5 stars and named it our pick for savings on account of its available discounts. Embrace pet insurance plans are available in all U.S. states except Maine.

Based on our research, there’s no difference between Embrace plans purchased through Allstate or on the Embrace website. Some consumers with an established Allstate relationship and dedicated personal agent may prefer discussing and purchasing the plan through the Allstate platform.

Embrace offers solid coverage, responsive customer service, a flexible wellness benefits program and multiple savings opportunities, based on our review. However, customers have complained about denied claims, cost increases and a lack of bundling opportunities with Allstate products.

How Allstate Scored in Our Methodology

Allstate scored 4.5 out of 5 stars based on our provider rating methodology scale. The company earned the highest marks in coverage, covered treatments and availability but lost points for cost and industry stranding.

Allstate’s Plans and Pricing

Allstate customers have access to both of Embrace’s pet insurance plans, covering accidents only or accidents and illnesses.

Embrace’s accident-only policies provide up to $5,000 in annual reimbursements to help pay for the treatment of sudden injuries, such as broken bones. The company’s accident and illness policies provide coverage for the care of both injuries and conditions that develop over time, such as cancer and joint issues. Coverage for both plans begins after designated waiting periods.

How Much Does Allstate Pet Insurance Cost?

The cost of Allstate pet insurance, administered by Embrace, is influenced by the coverage you select and your pet’s age, species, breed and location. Some pet breeds, such as French bulldogs, are more likely to develop certain health conditions, resulting in potentially higher insurance costs. Over time, pet insurance premiums may increase to adjust for inflation and the likelihood of an older pet developing health issues. A pet enrolling in an Embrace plan on or after 15 years old is eligible only for an accident-only plan, subject to a $5,000 annual coverage limit.

We collected several quotes to estimate the cost of Allstate coverage. Based on our research, the average cost of a a plan with a $5,000 coverage limit for dogs is $47 per month and $26 for cats

Pet owners looking for more comprehensive coverage can choose from exam fees and prescription drug add-ons for an extra $5 and $10 each month

You can also enroll in a wellness rewards program, which can cost between $19 and $52 per month on top of base plan pricing.

Marketwatch Guides Tip

Allstate pet insurance plans, administered by Embrace, cost slightly more than the national average of providers we reviewed. Although not the cheapest option, Embrace offers several discounts that policyholders can stack together to save money on premiums without compromising on coverage.

What Does Allstate Pet Insurance Cover?

Allstate’s base accident and illness plan covers services your pet could need in the event of an accident, injury, or acute or chronic illness, including veterinary exams, diagnostic tests and treatments. Pet owners can also choose to add wellness rewards coverage, which provides an annual allowance that pet owners can choose to spend on preventative care services, including routine vaccinations.

Allstate pet insurance, administered by Embrace, excludes coverage for pre-existing conditions, which are defined as symptoms or diagnosed diseases that first occurred before policy enrollment or during the waiting period. Other exclusions include costs related to the following:

  • Breeding, pregnancy and birth
  • Organ transplants and other experimental procedures
  • Working dog duties
  • Fighting, cruelty or neglect
  • Supplements
  • Select complementary therapies

Check out a sample policy to learn more about specific exclusions with Embrace.

Allstate Accident and Illness Plan

Administered by Embrace, a base Allstate pet insurance plan covers the costs of diagnosing and treating conditions caused by accidents, injuries or illnesses. Some covered conditions include:

  • Illnesses
  • Breed-related conditions
  • Genetic diseases
  • Chronic diseases
  • Dental trauma or illness
  • Behavioral conditions
  • Acute injuries

Covered diagnostics and treatments include:

  • Physical exams
  • Imaging tests
  • Prescription medications
  • Non-elective surgery
  • Rehabilitation
  • Specialty care
  • Overnight hospitalization
  • Emergency room visits
  • Cancer therapy

Allstate Wellness Rewards

Embrace’s preventative care plan — offered as a paid add-on — is among the most flexible of providers we’ve reviewed. Policyholders can choose from three tiers of wellness coverage. Pet owners can choose to spend wellness plan funds on approved preventive care services, which may include:

  • Vaccines
  • Exams
  • Screening tests
  • Parasite preventives
  • Dental care
  • Spay or neuter surgery
  • Grooming
  • Activity monitors
  • End-of-life care

Here is a breakdown of available wellness plan levels and associated monthly costs:

  • $250 wellness rewards: Adds $19 per month
  • $450 wellness rewards: Adds $35 per month
  • $650 wellness rewards: Adds $52 per month

Note that unused funds will not rollover into the next plan year.

Allstate’s Optional Add-On Coverage

Allstate’s plans are comprehensive, but pet owners can still choose to purchase add-ons. During sign-up in some states, the company may ask if you want to include or exclude exam fees or prescription drugs coverage, which run about $5 to $10 each per month. When using the online quote tool, these options are automatically toggled to the “on” position. If you do not want to add coverage, toggle each one to the “off” position.

Customizable Coverage Levels

Embrace offers a variety of deductibles, reimbursement rates and annual limits, allowing policyholders to customize their pet’s coverage and monthly payments. However, you cannot increase your pet’s coverage levels after enrollment without additional underwriting — which results in resetting the waiting periods — so choosing the highest possible coverage at sign-up is prudent. You can always lower your coverage later.

Deductible Options

Embrace offers five choices of deductibles: $100, $250, $500, $750 or $1,000. Choosing a higher deductible can help lower monthly premiums, but will also increase the amount you pay when you file your first claim each policy term.

Reimbursement Rates

Customers can choose a 70%, 80% or 90% reimbursement rate, which is the amount of a veterinary bill Embrace will pay out after your deductible. Choosing a lower reimbursement rate can result in lower monthly premium costs.

Annual Limit Options

Embrace offers several annual limit options to suit a range of budgets: $5,000, $8,000, $10,000, $15,000 or unlimited coverage. Note that unlimited coverage is more expensive than the other choices.

Policy Sign-Up, Claims Filing and Payout Processes

Pet owners can sign up for Allstate pet insurance, administered by Embrace, by obtaining a quote online. You can head to the Allstate website and click on the option to get a quote for pet insurance, which should bring you to the Embrace quote tool to enter information about you and your pet. From there, you will receive a preliminary quote, and can further adjust your overall insurance cost by customizing your annual coverage limit, deductible and reimbursement rate. The website clearly lists covered and excluded conditions, as well as a sample policy, based on our research.

Once your pet is signed up, you should receive information detailing how to set up your online account with Embrace, the company that is administering your pet insurance policy. You can use the online account to upload records from your pet’s most recent veterinary exam, which must have occurred in the 12 months before enrollment. Otherwise, you must take your pet to the vet for an exam within two weeks of enrollment.

You can file and manage claims through the MyEmbrace website and app. Customer reviews report that Embrace sometimes takes several weeks to process and close claims. Sending your pet’s medical records and veterinary invoices to Embrace as soon as you file a claim may help speed up the process.

Like most other pet insurance providers, Embrace pays reimbursements out to pet owners after claims close. You may opt to receive a paper check in the mail or direct deposit into your bank account. Embrace policies do not offer a direct vet payment option, unlike some other insurers we reviewed.

Allstate’s Waiting Periods and Age Restrictions

A waiting period is the time between signing up for a policy and when benefits begin, and it varies by company and state due to insurance laws. In general, Embrace has waiting periods of two days for accidents, 14 days for illnesses and six months for orthopedic conditions. However, the company may reduce the orthopedic waiting period to 14 days with an exam.

Pets must be at least 6 weeks old and no older than 15 years to enroll in Embrace’s standard accident and illness coverage. Pets older than 15 years, and those with certain medical conditions, are not eligible for illness coverage. Instead, these pets can enroll in an accident-only policy.

Allstate vs. Lemonade

Allstate and Lemonade operate on different ends of the pet insurance spectrum. Allstate, administered through Embrace, offers comprehensive coverage at a relatively high monthly premium. Lemonade sells basic, affordable coverage that requires the addition of several riders to create a fully-rounded policy.

Allstate and Lemonade each offer wellness benefits that are administered differently. Lemonade reimburses wellness items based on a set fee schedule, while Embrace provides flexibility in allowing policyholders to use benefits as they wish.

We found that Lemonade is a good choice for pet owners who appreciate artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology for policy management and claims filing. Embrace may suit those who value customer care from human representatives.

Allstate vs. Spot

Allstate and Spot pet insurance plans are similar, based on our review. Each provides comprehensive coverage, numerous customization options and optional wellness benefits. Allstate, administered through Embrace, generally reserves accident-only coverage for older or sick pets, while Spot offers this lower-cost coverage option to any enrollee. Those with younger pets who are interested in an Embrace accident-only policy can call to request coverage.

We think Allstate and Spot could appeal to a similar population of pet owners looking for quality customer service and who are willing to pay a bit more for coverage.

Methodology: Our System for Rating Pet Insurance Companies

We review each pet insurance company based on factors most important to pet parents like you. Our process includes in-depth industry research into each provider, such as comparing coverage options, gathering quotes online to determine pricing and reading reviews to assess customer service. To better inform our reviews, we’ve surveyed 3,000 dog and cat owners nationwide to determine the most important elements of pet insurance coverage. We’ve also bought pet insurance plans for 10 of our team’s pets to test the customer experience of various providers for ourselves.

We then score each provider on a 100-point scale and calculate an overall rating out of five stars. Here are more details about the factors we consider when reviewing pet insurance providers:

  • Costs and Discounts (22.5%): To assess pricing, we collected sample quotes for 10 mixed-breed and purebred dogs and cats, ranging from 3 months to 8 years old. Our team collected a total of 17,330 quotes directly from 22 provider’s websites, requesting at least two quotes for all 50 U.S. states from every insurer and pet profile. Providers earn the most points in this category for offering affordable coverage and more than four discount options to customers.
  • Coverage (22.5%): The best pet insurance companies offer a range of plans, customization options and more so pet owners can choose the right coverage. Companies offering a wide variety of coverage options earn full points in this category. We also look at waiting periods and award the most points if companies offer policies with shorter waiting periods than its competitors.
  • Covered Treatments (17.5%): According to our survey of pet owners, coverage is one of the most important factors when shopping for pet insurance. Companies with a breadth of included treatments and unique coverages as standard within their policies receive more points in this category than those with less options.
  • Customer Experience (17.5%): Respondents to our survey also valued customer service when comparing pet insurance providers. We score each company based on its website accessibility and overall usability, customer service, mobile apps, money-back guarantees and veterinarian telehealth options. The insurers with the most customer experience offerings receive the most points.
  • Industry Standing (10%): We review up-to-date ratings and accreditation information from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot, and score companies based on customer reviews and years of industry experience.
  • Availability (10%): Some companies do not offer policies for pets over a certain age. For this category, we deduct points from providers that have age limits for older pets. We also consider state availability, international coverage and if a company extends coverage options to breeds considered dangerous.

We use our rating system to compare each company we review and determine the best pet insurance companies in the industry. To learn more, read our full pet insurance methodology to see how we review and score providers.
