Select Home Warranty has three levels of coverage: Bronze Care, Gold Care and Platinum Care. The Bronze Care plan covers appliances like your washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, range, oven, microwave, refrigerator and garbage disposal. The Gold Care plan covers HVAC, plumbing, the electrical system, water heater and ductwork. With Platinum Care, Select covers all systems and appliances included in the Bronze and Gold plan options while adding coverage for plumbing stoppages, garage door openers and ceiling fans.

Our Take on Select Home Warranty

The average homeowner pays about $53 per month for a home warranty, based on our research into over two dozen companies. In contrast, all of Select’s policies are available for less than $50. When combined with the company’s competitive service call fees of $75 or $100, Select is a good choice for homeowners on a budget.

However, Select’s coverage caps are lower than many options from other providers. For example, cooling systems are protected up to $3,000 per term but most other items have limits of only $500. In addition, if you purchase add-on coverage, your limit will be $400 per item, per term. Lower coverage limits might still be enough for homeowners who have newer appliances still under a manufacturer’s warranty, or for those seeking coverage for rental and investment properties

Pros and Cons of Select Home Warranty

Pros

One of the cheapest home warranty providers

Below-average service fees

Two free months of roof leak coverage with new policy purchase

Cons

Lower coverage limits than competitors, including for add-ons

Requires three years of maintenance records for full claims payout

We found that Select’s purchasing process made coverage comparisons easy. However, Select doesn’t offer a sample contract to download during the purchase process. Additionally, the company doesn’t explain its service fees during the online purchase process. You can, however, contact a Select representative to establish your service fee before buying a plan.

Methodology: Our System for Rating Home Warranty Companies

We at the MarketWatch Guides team have developed a comprehensive rating system to evaluate home warranty providers based on objective criteria. Our researchers assess each company by directly communicating with representatives, reviewing sample contracts and analyzing consumer feedback. Additionally, we have conducted surveys and focus groups to gather valuable homeowner insights.

We assign scores to each provider based on the data collected, focusing on key factors such as pricing, coverage, trustworthiness, and customer experience. Below is the breakdown of how we score home warranty companies.

  • Pricing (30%): We analyze home warranty pricing in relation to overall value by considering monthly plan costs, average service fees, upcharges for after-hour and weekend repairs, and how companies handle depreciation. We also consider customer responses to our latest home warranty survey about pricing and general satisfaction.
  • Coverage (30%): Companies that offer transferable plans, have high coverage limits and have shorter waiting periods score highly in this category. We also take into account each provider’s individual coverage limits, repair requirements and coverage exemptions for major systems and appliances.
  • Trustworthiness (20%): We consider factors such as years in business, company size, Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot ratings, and service guarantees in this rating category. We also analyze whether or not a company has any active or past lawsuits against it.
  • Customer Experience (20%): The more streamlined a provider’s customer experience is, the higher it scores in this category. We look at the availability of online sample contracts, available plan information, online quote tools, claims response times, cancellation policies and more. We also consider responses centered around general and claims satisfaction in our latest survey.
