Choice Home Warranty
4.4
Best value for coverage
  • Average Monthly Cost: $64.44
  • Service Fee: $100
  • Better Business Bureau rating: B
  • Plan Options: Two

Choice has two home warranty plan options, both of which include systems and appliance coverage. The Basic Plan from Choice covers major systems such as your heating, electrical and plumbing, as well as plumbing stoppages, a water heater and a range of household appliances. The Total Plan encompasses everything in the Basic Plan plus your washer and dryer, air conditioning system and refrigerator.

Most covered items have a $3,000 limit, which is higher than what some competitors offer. However, Choice has a $500 annual coverage limit on garbage disposals and multiple add-on items.

Our Take on Choice Home Warranty

Our team gave Choice Home Warranty the highest rating in our review of 26 providers. The company’s upper coverage limits of $3,000 on most individual items (excluding garbage disposals and add-ons) are higher than many competitors we’ve reviewed. For example, Choice Home Warranty extends coverage limits that are $1,000 higher than those of competitors, such as Liberty Home Guard and Select Home Warranty.

Choice may be a good option since it offers coverage for homeowners on a budget who are looking for a policy with high coverage limits. We encourage you to read the fine print of sample home warranty contracts to compare exclusions, restrictions and coverage limits among providers.

What Customers Said About Choice Home Warranty

Reviews and testimonials can provide a more in-depth look at how home warranty companies handle customer service and support. Our team analyzed BBB and Trustpilot reviews to gather insights into customers’ experiences with Choice Home Warranty.

What Customers Like:

  • Quality repairs: Many customers who received service with a Choice Home Warranty-issued technician seemed happy with the quality of service provided and acknowledged the company’s professional team members.
  • Customer service: Another frequent point of praise was Choice Home Warranty’s sales team, which many customers described as professional and easy to work with.
  • Quality plumbing repairs: Multiple reviews mentioned quality plumbing repairs performed by Choice Home Warranty’s network of partner companies and technicians.

What Customers Don’t Like:

  • Denied claims: The most common complaints from BBB users described denied claims. Some customers accused Choice Home Warranty of using fine print in its contract to deny all types of damage as not being related to “normal wear and tear.”
  • Second and third opinions: Choice Home Warranty’s contract states that the company has the right to obtain a second opinion following a diagnosis by a contractor. Some customers claimed Choice required them to get a second opinion after a representative already said their initial claim was approved.
  • Long wait times: Some customers complained about long wait times after a claim was approved.
  • Failure to pay technicians: Reviews of Choice Home Warranty claim the company may not always pay its contractors on time, which prompts contractors to refuse to perform work. Multiple reviews allege local technicians refuse to do work associated with Choice Home Warranty, claiming the company would not pay them, which effectively left homeowners with no way to use their policy.

Choice Home Warranty is currently facing government action in Arizona related to accusations of fraudulent market activity. Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich has filed a consumer fraud lawsuit against Choice, claiming the company “used contract exclusions, payment caps and bad-faith refusals to avoid paying for repairs.”

We reached out to Choice Home Warranty for comment on its negative customer reviews and government actions related to fraudulent market activity, but did not receive a response.

Choice Home Warranty Review: FAQs

Below, we’ve answered frequently asked questions about Choice Home Warranty:

All Choice Home Warranty policies require a flat-rate $100 service call fee, which you pay each time a technician visits your home in response to a claim. This fee is consistent, regardless of the actual value of repairs received.

Choice Home Warranty says in its contract that it aims to respond to approved claims within 48 hours. However, its contract also specifies that it has no obligation, financial or otherwise, to adhere to this timeline.

In our review of dozens of companies nationwide, Choice Home Warranty was generally affordable but not the cheapest home warranty provider. Select Home Warranty, which offers plans priced under $50 per month throughout the country, has more affordable coverage.

Methodology: Our System for Rating Home Warranty Companies

We at the MarketWatch Guides team have developed a comprehensive rating system to evaluate home warranty providers based on objective criteria. Our researchers assess each company by directly communicating with representatives, reviewing sample contracts and analyzing consumer feedback. Additionally, we have conducted surveys and focus groups to gather valuable homeowner insights.

We assign scores to each provider based on the data collected, focusing on key factors such as pricing, coverage, trustworthiness, and customer experience. Below is the breakdown of how we score home warranty companies.

  • Pricing (30%): We analyze home warranty pricing in relation to overall value by considering monthly plan costs, average service fees, upcharges for after-hour and weekend repairs, and how companies handle depreciation. We also consider customer responses to our latest home warranty survey about pricing and general satisfaction.
  • Coverage (30%): Companies that offer transferable plans, have high coverage limits and have shorter waiting periods score highly in this category. We also take into account each provider’s individual coverage limits, repair requirements and coverage exemptions for major systems and appliances.
  • Trustworthiness (20%): We consider factors such as years in business, company size, Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot ratings, and service guarantees in this rating category. We also analyze whether or not a company has any active or past lawsuits against it.
  • Customer Experience (20%): The more streamlined a provider’s customer experience is, the higher it scores in this category. We look at the availability of online sample contracts, available plan information, online quote tools, claims response times, cancellation policies and more. We also consider responses centered around general and claims satisfaction in our latest survey.
