What Is the Best Warranty for Used Cars?
Carchex is our top pick for used car warranty companies. We researched the best car warranty companies to find ones that offer good service with long term lengths for used vehicles. Our top five companies are:
- Carchex Best Industry Reputation
- Endurance Best Comprehensive Coverage
- Autopom! Best Customer Service
- Omega Auto Care Best Maintenance Benefits
- Everything Breaks Best Contract Term Selection
The sections below will provide you with an in-depth understanding of each of the best used car warranty companies and what they provide.
With over 20 years of experience, an A+ rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau and endorsements from top brands such as Kelley Blue Book, Carfax and more. Carchex is best for vehicle owners who want a protection plan company with a solid industry reputation.
Carchex ranks as one of the best car warranty companies for used cars because it has highly customizable coverage for cars of varying ages, based on our research. In our experience getting quotes from Carchex, we found that prices can vary depending on the sales representative you speak with. We recommend asking for discounts and letting the sales person know you’re shopping around to get a lower price.
High mileage limit for used vehicles
Strong industry reputation
Offers terms of up to 10 years
Claims are handled by a third-party administrator
Doesn’t offer maintenance coverage
Endurance advertises an unlimited amount of miles for its contracts, while Carchex caps its mileage limit at 250,000. However, Carchex offers an annual limit at 10 years, versus Endurance’s eight-year cap.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, the average amount of miles drivers put on their cars per year in 2022 was 13,476 miles. After 10 years, this would be 134,760 miles, which doesn’t even come close to the 250,000 mile mark. Endurance may be a better option for commercial and rideshare drivers that have to put a lot of miles on their vehicles for their jobs, but for the typical driver, Carchex is the superior choice.
The Powertrain Plus plan is the best option for used cars because it offers a good balance of affordability and coverage. The plan includes all powertrain systems plus the A/C, as well as the electrical and fuel systems.
Here are all the plans you can get from Carchex:
- Titanium: Comprehensive limited coverage, similar to a factory warranty
- Platinum: High-level coverage that spans hundreds of parts across the vehicle
- Powertrain Plus: Covers powertrain components like the engine and transmission, plus other major parts
- Powertrain: Powertrain protection for high-mileage vehicles
- Extra Care: Protection for crucial components outside of the powertrain
Carchex sells vehicle service contracts with term lengths that range from monthly plans to 10 years of coverage. Customers in all 50 states can purchase vehicle protection plans for cars with up to 250,000 miles. It brokers VSCs from providers such as American Auto Shield, Zurich and Assurant.
Our team received multiple quotes from Carchex for different vehicles. Plans ranged in price from $150 to $160 per month. You may be able to secure lower rates by negotiating, so we recommend asking for discounts to get the best rates from Carchex.
Endurance is the best option if you want comprehensive coverage for your used car. It offers six plans that include additional benefits for a year, and a plan dedicated solely to maintenance coverage.
Endurance also handles claims directly instead of working through a middleman. It has an A- rating on the BBB, and most of its customer reviews mention excellent customer service.
Handles claims directly
No mileage limit for coverage
Advantage plan covers regular maintenance services
Offers a free benefits package for only one year
We think the Secure Plus plan is the best option for used cars. This option covers the powertrain along with other crucial systems like the electrical system, steering and brakes. The Advantage plan is also a notable option since it covers regular maintenance services like oil changes and brake pads. This makes it easy to keep your car in good shape as it ages.
Endurance offers six levels of coverage, all of which include roadside assistance, towing and Elite Benefits for the first year. This perk includes collision and rekeying discounts. Endurance is available in all 50 states, with mechanical breakdown insurance in California. The company advertises unlimited mileage on its plans and can last up to eight years, making it a considerable option for your used vehicle.
Here’s an overview of Endurance’s protection plans:
- Supreme: Bumper-to-bumper coverage for most parts of the vehicle
- Superior: Limited coverage for hundreds of vehicle components
- Secure Plus: Coverage for steering, braking systems, electrical systems and the powertrain
- Secure: Basic powertrain coverage
- Select Premier: Extensive protection geared toward high-mileage cars
- Advantage: Includes mechanical breakdown coverage, regular maintenance, oil changes and engine diagnostics
Our team received multiple quotes from Endurance across several coverage levels, from comprehensive to basic powertrain. Overall, Endurance’s contracts averaged $104 per month. Endurance’s plans apply to a term of 2.5 years/40,000 miles which means the plans cost about $1,248 per year of coverage. This is slightly less than the industry average of $1,297 per year of coverage.
We gave autopom! our Best Customer Service award in recognition of its high customer review ratings across the industry. Autopom! stands for “automotive peace of mind” and sells three vehicle protection plans. Unlike many of its competitors, autopom! doesn’t offer a powertrain-only coverage level. Instead, the company’s Powertrain Plus option covers your vehicle’s powertrain, air conditioning system and some electrical items.
Autopom! has an A+ rating and accreditation on BBB. On Trustpilot, the company has 4.7 out of 5 stars from over 350 reviews, with 89% of reviews giving the company five stars. Company representatives frequently respond to customer complaints and concerns with attempts to resolve issues.
Positive customer reviews
Affordable plan options
Responsive customer service representatives
High down payment compared to other competitors
Contract availability limited by state
Though autopom! offers three coverage options, the Mid-Level and Powertrain Plus plans are the most useful for drivers of used cars. The Powertrain Plus plan, specifically, stands out from most competitors because of its extensive coverage and general affordability.
Here’s the coverage autopom! offers:
- Exclusionary: This is the company’s comprehensive coverage level, which includes protection for all but a specified list of exclusions.
- Mid-Level: This is a stated-component plan that includes coverage for most of the parts and systems in your car, including the powertrain, steering, electrical components, air conditioning and braking system.
- Powertrain Plus: This is autopom!’s least extensive plan, which covers your vehicle’s powertrain, air conditioning system and certain electrical items.
Eligibility for autopom! plans depends on where you live, in addition to other factors, such as your car’s age and mileage.Though the company’s 7-year/150,000-mile term is among the shortest of our picks for best used car warranty providers, autopom! is a viable option if you need coverage for your used vehicle.
The average price of an autopom! plan is $831 per year. This is significantly lower than the industry average of $1,297 per year.
During our February 2025 study, we received a quote of $136 per month for an Exclusionary plan for a 2017 Toyota Tacoma with 100,000 miles. This included a 4-year/162,0010-mile coverage term and a payment term of 24 months, resulting in a total cost of $3,264.
Omega Auto Care is a good choice for your used car if you want a company with extra perks like tire repair and free maintenance. These free perks go beyond what a typical VSC covers, which is why we recognized Omega as the Best for Maintenance Benefits.
Omega Auto Care has decades of experience serving automotive customers and an outstanding industry reputation, with an A+ rating and accreditation from the BBB.
To back up its industry reputation, Omega Auto Care customers give the company solid reviews. It holds a score of 3.8 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot, with about 73% of reviews at or above four stars. Customers on the BBB give Omega an average rating of 3.6 out of 5 stars.
Handles claims directly
Offers one year of free maintenance coverage
Plans include road hazard tire repair/replacement
Some plans are capped at 100,000 or 150,000 miles
Omega Auto Care offers three levels of powertrain protection, and its Powertrain Enhanced is the best option for used cars. In addition to the powertrain, this plan covers the electrical, cooling, fuel and air conditioning systems.
Omega Auto Care offers three main plans:
- New Exclusionary: This plan is limited to vehicles no more than seven model years old with less than 100,000 miles on the odometer. It covers most parts and repairs except a small list of excluded damages.
- Used Stated Coverage: Designed for vehicles up to 10 model years old with less than 150,000 miles. This plan isn’t as comprehensive as Omega’s New Exclusionary coverage, but still covers many critical systems and parts.
- Powertrain Protection: This plan is limited to vehicles up to 15 model years old with less than 250,000 miles. It covers essential systems like the engine, transmission and drive axles.
The three options within Omega’s Powertrain Protection are called Powertrain, Powertrain Plus and Powertrain Enhanced. All plans also come with maintenance coverage for the first year. Omega’s Maintenance Program includes oil changes, brake pads or shoes, battery replacement and cooling system maintenance.
We were unable to get updated cost data from Omega Auto Care during our last update in recent updates. However, quotes we received in 2023 averaged to $138 per month for 24 months for five years of coverage. This meant that, over a five-year term, Omega Auto Care coverage cost an average of $660 per year — quite a bit lower than the industry average.
Everything Breaks features a unique selection of contract terms. You can choose from monthly, one-year and three-year protection plans. There are five vehicle protection options with Everything Breaks. Along with the flexible coverage terms we mentioned earlier, the provider protects vehicles up to the 250,000-mile mark, which is great for drivers looking for used car extended warranties.
Here are the details on each Everything Breaks vehicle protection plan:
- Topline: This plan features comprehensive coverage for vehicles that are less than 20 years old and have less than 125,000 miles.
- Deluxe: This is an expansive stated-component plan for vehicles that are less than 20 years old and have less than 150,000 miles. Protected components include parts of the engine, transmission, transfer case, drive axle, air conditioning, heating, suspension, steering, cooling, fuel, brakes, electrical, seals, gaskets and hybrid parts.
- Enhanced Powertrain: This mid-level protection plan covers named mechanical and electrical parts on vehicles less than 20 years old with less than 240,000 miles. Components covered include parts of the engine, transmission, transfer case, drive axle, air conditioning, heating, cooling, fuel, electrical and hybrid parts.
- Standard Powertrain: This coverage protects vehicles less than 20 years old with less than 240,000 miles. Components covered include parts of the engine, transmission and drive axle.
- Critical Coverage Road Club: This plan pays 50% of covered repair costs (with stated-component and exclusionary coverage options) and offers both roadside assistance and maintenance benefits. Keep in mind that “50% of repair costs” specifically means up to $500 per occurrence and $2,000 during a 12-month period.
The Topline, Deluxe, Enhanced Powertrain and Standard Powertrain plans are also offered as Elite plans specifically designed to protect high-end vehicles.
In February 2025, we received quotes from Everything Breaks for an Enhanced Powertrain plan and a Deluxe plan with an unlimited month-to-month term and $100 deductible.
The Enhanced Powertrain plan cost $120 per month for a 2022 Toyota Tacoma with less than 250,000 miles. However, when we applied a discount for signing up after the first call, the monthly rate dropped to $80 per month.
The Deluxe plan cost $100 per month for a 2017 Toyota Tacoma with less than 175,000 miles. No discount applied to the quote for Deluxe coverage during our secret shopping.

Remember, you’ll find different rates based on your specific vehicle, so the company that’s best for a Toyota Tacoma may not reflect the company that’s best for a Toyota Corolla.
Where To Buy a Used Car Warranty
Used car warranties can be purchased from a wide range of providers. Each provider type has pros, cons and limitations to consider when looking for the best used car warranty.
Aftermarket Used Car Warranties
Going with a third-party provider allows some flexibility in time of purchase and repair facility. You can usually buy aftermarket warranties online, over the phone or, in some cases, through a dealership.
Factory Used Car Warranties
Automakers offer various forms of protection plans that extend coverage beyond the new car factory warranty. Below we break down the most common types. You can typically purchase these at dealerships.
Certified Pre-Owned Warranty
Certified pre-owned programs usually add more time to the factory warranty or provide similar coverage up to a certain limit. We found that Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Kia offer the best CPO warranties in the industry, with a combination of benefits and high mileage limits.
Manufacturer Extended Warranty
Manufacturer extended warranties appeal to many drivers due to the trust associated with knowing their vehicle is being worked on by factory-trained technicians using original equipment manufacturer parts, but they tend to have stricter limits on time of purchase and repair location.
Mechanical Breakdown Insurance for Used Cars
Some car insurance companies like Geico offer mechanical breakdown insurance, which is similar to an extended warranty. MBI has stricter limitations than standard extended warranties. Unlike extended coverage from an independent warranty company, with MBI, there will likely be fewer repair centers you can choose from. Additionally, MBI isn’t always as comprehensive in what it covers.
Is It Worth Buying a Warranty on a Used Car?
Buying an extended car warranty for a used vehicle is worth it if you plan to keep driving your car for many years beyond its factory warranty coverage. A used car warranty is also a good idea if your vehicle has a reputation for poor reliability and high repair costs (RepairPal is a great resource here).
If you’re the type of person who routinely trades in your vehicle for something new, an extended warranty isn’t something you should consider. A vehicle service contract probably isn’t worthwhile if you have the financial wherewithal to cover future auto repairs.
You can check your car’s warranty status by using the VIN to create an account on the manufacturer’s website. You can also contact a dealership from the automaker for assistance.
Used Car Warranty Companies: FAQ
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about used car warranty companies.
A car warranty, often referred to as a factory warranty, comes standard with all new cars. An extended warranty lengthens the terms of coverage and can be purchased from your car’s manufacturer or a third-party provider. Manufacturer extended warranties typically need to be purchased before the factory warranty expires.
If you have a third-party extended warranty, you can likely take your car to any accredited repair shop. If you have a manufacturer extended warranty, you’ll likely need to take your car to the dealership you purchased your car from for repairs. Check your contract for details.
You may be able to negotiate the cost of an extended car warranty with third-party providers, just like in our secret shopping experience, but it depends on the provider.
